Jakartovice combines Baroque heritage and a long history with themes of slate mining and nature conservation. Seasonal events and precisely defined rental and timetable periods provide additional pointers for planning your trip.

Baroque heritage and local history

The Baroque parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Jakartovice dates from 1755. Another Baroque landmark is the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from 1725. The statue is therefore 30 years older than the church; both dates mark specific points in the town's history. Visitors interested in historic architecture and religious art will find two different examples of the Baroque here.

Jakartovice was founded by German colonists and first mentioned in 1250. During the Bohemian-Hungarian Wars, the village fell into decline in 1472; it was resettled in 1540. Its founding, first mention, decline and resettlement form a chronological sequence that looks beyond the Baroque heritage to the earlier history of the village.

Slate mining and nature conservation

The Štola Jakartovice was created through the mining of clay slate. It is not open to the public; entry is prohibited. Check locally on access conditions before travelling. The Štola is also an important hibernation site for bats, especially the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis). The history of mining and species conservation are closely connected to the same place, although the Štola cannot be planned as a sightseeing destination.

In June 2025, it was reported that Jakartovice is part of the Krajina Břidlice National Geopark. The protection of the dusky large blue butterfly (Maculinea nausithous) is also relevant to nature in the Jakartovice area. Between Jakartovice and Mladecko there is also a complex of floodplain meadows with surrounding trees and shrubs. These details describe different aspects of the landscape: the geopark, the protection of a butterfly species and the character of the meadows.

Forest paths, ponds and swimming

The area around Jakartovice is suitable for hiking. At the edge of the village, a forest path leads towards Bohdanovice to several former ponds associated with slate mining; the path is also suitable for bicycles. Since path conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before cycling.

Several ponds lie in the forest between Jakartovice, Staré Heřminovy and Svobodné Heřmanice, near the 482-metre-high mountain Za Starou Vodou. These ponds are not suitable for swimming. By contrast, a flooded slate quarry near Jakartovice is used for swimming in summer. Before visiting the quarry, check local conditions for access and swimming.

Events, rail service and accommodation

The Jakartovský karmaš has been held annually since 1995 on the first Saturday in September. The festival includes a mass, fairground attractions, brass band music, refreshments and evening entertainment. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact date for the year you have in mind.

A 2024 timetable lists Jakartovice as a stop on the Hvozdnický Express route between Opava and Svobodné Heřmanice. In 2026, the express ran on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 1 May to 28 September. These details apply to the respective timetable years; if travelling later, check the timetable valid at that time.

A tourist cottage is located in the forest about 1 km beyond Jakartovice. It is rented out each year only from 1 April to 31 October. As seasonal dates and booking conditions can change, check the rental period for your travel dates. The cottage is therefore a seasonal accommodation option and should not be confused with the hotel information.
