Dolní Benešov brings together castle history, religious buildings, a landscape of ponds and protected natural areas. This offers a range of options for your stay, from historic architecture to a walk around Nezmar or annual events. If you are looking for a hotel in Dolní Benešov, it helps to decide first what you would like to focus on during your stay.

The Castle and its History

Dolní Benešov Castle is a protected cultural monument and an example of castle architecture spanning several stylistic periods. Its core dates back to the 16th century. A portal with a coat of arms dated 1498 has been preserved. The English park was laid out around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, covers 1.7 hectares and surrounds the castle buildings on all sides.

The dates refer to different features: 1498 is the date on the coat of arms on the portal, the 16th century marks the castle’s core, and the park was laid out later, around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This places the history of the castle’s construction and the creation of the park in separate historical periods.

The Church of St Martin is also a protected cultural monument and was probably built as early as around 1678. The Chapel of the Holy Cross is longitudinal in plan and Neo-Gothic in style, with a stepped gable. It was built in the 1870s from exposed, unrendered brickwork, typical of the historicist architecture of the Hlučínsko region. The statue of the Immaculata in Dolní Benešov is a copy of a late Baroque statue; the original dates from the 1780s. These dates span the probable construction period of the church, the late Baroque original and the later Neo-Gothic chapel.

Landscape and Water

A 3.6 km circular trail runs along the shore of Nezmar Pond, offering views of the town and the church. Its length, lakeside route and viewpoints give the walk a character of its own, distinct from the individual buildings. There is also a small recreational sailing facility at the same pond.

The Koutské a Zábřežské louky Nature Reserve extends across the cadastral areas of Dolní Benešov, Kravaře ve Slezsku and Zábřeh u Hlučína. Wet meadows, scattered trees and alluvial forests shape the area in the Opava River floodplain; there are also remnants of former river channels and pools that are periodically flooded. The area around Přehyně Pond is one of the two protected natural areas in Dolní Benešov. The centuries-old flood protection embankments running through the landscape of Dolní Benešov are also part of its character.

Annual Events and Other Experiences

The traditional fish harvest at Nezmar Pond takes place every year on the first weekend of November. Dolní Benešov also hosts the annual “Hudební jaro na Hlučínsku” music festival. The fish harvest is therefore tied to a specific weekend, while the festival is another recurring event in the annual calendar. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the exact date before booking a hotel.

Zábřeh Airfield offers sightseeing flights. Alongside the area’s architectural history and landscape, this provides another activity option, while annual events are another possible focus for your stay in Dolní Benešov.
