Markvartovice Between Village and Region

Markvartovice lies in the HluÄŤĂnsko region between the Opava River and the present-day state border with Poland, in the area between Opava and Ostrava. Despite its proximity to the regional capital, Ostrava, the village retains its peaceful, rural character. Fields and forests surround Markvartovice; abundant greenery and a network of paths and cycling routes define the landscape. If you are deciding whether to focus your stay on village history, scenery or outdoor activities, this combination offers a clear starting point.

The Chapel and Local History

Markvartovice was first mentioned in writing in 1377. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity provides a specific link to the village’s architectural history: it is a Baroque chapel dating from around the mid-17th century and is protected as a cultural monument. After a fire in 1945, it was repaired. The dates mark distinct milestones: 1377 is the village’s first written mention, the mid-17th century is the chapel’s approximate construction period, and 1945 is the year of the fire after which it was repaired. The first written mention of Markvartovice should therefore not be confused with the building’s construction date. The terms also serve different purposes: “Baroque” identifies the style and period, while “protected as a cultural monument” describes its protection status.

Paths, Cycling Route and Nature Trail

Two routes described in different ways can help you find your way by bike. Cycling Route C runs from Štípky through the built-up part of Markvartovice to Černý les. Local Cycling Route A runs north of and above Petřkovice, Ludgeřovice and Markvartovice. For Route C, the starting point, passage through the village and destination are specified; Route A is described by its location north of and above the three villages. The descriptions answer different questions: Route C specifies its start, passage through the village and end, while Route A mainly indicates its geographical location. The general network of paths and cycling routes offers a broader overview of opportunities for outdoor activities in the area; the descriptions of Routes A and C indicate specific routes. Check the current signage before setting off.

The Areál opevnění Darkovičky nature trail also starts in Markvartovice, at the MO-S 16 Rozcestí infantry bunker. The trail guide, published in 2022, notes that route details may change; check the information before your trip.

Another, separate cycling option is the Pumprtack Marvartovice pump track. It was developed from a small circular track into a larger pump track facility. Check local conditions before using it.

Getting There and Events

The village centre is a useful landmark for getting around: bus stops are located there. Check their locations before setting off if you are planning your journey.

The Odpust is one of Markvartovice’s traditional annual events. The date and programme may vary. If the Odpust is important to your trip, check both in advance. The chapel and the Odpust offer different ways to connect with the village’s history: a protected building on the one hand and a traditional annual event on the other.
