Different interests come together during a stay in Hlučín: the castle, town fortifications and parish church offer points of connection to the town’s history, the museum focuses on regional history, and there are beach volleyball courts at Hlučínské jezero. Seasonal offerings include the Wake Park cable tow and the church visit “Cesta k nebesům.”

Castle, Town Fortifications and Parish Church

Following its renovation from 2002 to 2007, the castle became home to the Hlučínsko Museum, the municipal art school and the town library. This brings museum work, art and a library together in one building.

The stone town fortifications were built around 1530 to 1535. The wall was about 900 metres long, around 4.5 metres high and approximately 2 metres thick; twelve semicircular bastions reinforced it. The length, height and thickness describe the structure from different perspectives, while the bastions identify another feature of its design.

The Gothic parish church of St John the Baptist is located south of the market square, near the town fortifications. The chancel and nave are thought to date from the first half of the 14th century. This presumed date is considerably earlier than the construction of the fortifications: the church and the wall therefore represent different historical layers of Hlučín.

Regional History at the Museum

The permanent exhibition “Kdo jsou lidé na Hlučínsku?” at the Hlučínsko Museum explores the region’s history. Its modern, interactive format also includes virtual reality. It thus complements the study of individual buildings with a regional perspective.

If you would like to visit the exhibition, check the current opening hours and access arrangements in advance. The conditions for visiting “Cesta k nebesům” are also important: access to the church attic leads to the bells and to a viewpoint overlooking Hlučín and the surrounding area. It is available seasonally from April to November and is weather-dependent; check whether access is possible before your visit.

Cycling Route and Leisure Activities

Cycle Route No. 5, “Jantarová stezka,” passes through the Hlučínsko microregion from Hať via Darkovice and Darkovičky to Hlučín, then continues along the Opava towards Ostrava. This places Hlučín on the route without implying that the local section is the entire route.

The Wake Park Hlučín cable tow is 920 metres long and operates from May to September. If its seasonal operation is important to your travel plans, check the specific dates before you arrive.

The beach volleyball courts at Hlučínské jezero are suitable for recreational sport and organised tournaments. They can be used with advance reservation. This means planning differs from that for the Wake Park cable tow: reservations are essential for the courts, while the cable tow has a seasonal operating period.

Demonstrations of the defence of the fortifications are regularly held at the Areál čs. opevnění Hlučín-Darkovičky in cooperation with units of the Czech Army. As no specific event dates are given, check the schedule if a demonstration is important to your travel plans.

Seasonality and Reservations Compared

The time frames for the activities do not coincide: the Wake Park cable tow’s operating season from May to September falls within the church’s seasonal access period from April to November, which is also weather-dependent. Advance reservations are required for the beach volleyball courts, while the dates of the demonstrations at the Areál determine when you can visit. Before you travel, check the conditions relevant to your plans.
