Vicenza: Palladio’s Architecture and Monte Berico
Accommodation in Vicenza
Vicenza brings together Palladio’s architecture, museums, religious history and historic parks. The UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the city of Vicenza and 23 buildings designed by Andrea Palladio. You can shape your stay around different interests, from the famous theatre and art collections to the sanctuary on Monte Berico.
Palladio’s Architecture in Vicenza
The Teatro Olimpico is the world’s first covered masonry theatre. Andrea Palladio built it between 1580 and 1585; it was inaugurated upon completion. The theatre also hosts stage and music productions, with a changing programme. Here, an important work by Palladio meets the enduring use of the building as a performance venue.
The Basilica Palladiana is considered a landmark of Vicenza. It is known for the Serlian loggias designed by Palladio, which surround the medieval Palazzo della Ragione. The design reveals Palladio’s work on a building that encloses an older palazzo. The Basilica’s terrace is a monumental viewpoint in the heart of the city. From there, the 360-degree view takes in the historic centre and the Berici Hills.
The terrace is fully accessible to people with mobility impairments; a dedicated lift provides convenient access to the second floor. Confirm access arrangements before travelling.
Museums and the History of Vicenza
At the Palladio Museum, you can see original drawings by Palladio alongside models and videos. The Silk Room broadens the picture of Vicenza’s history to include the city’s silk production and international silk trade. Take the Venice–Milan railway line to Vicenza station, then walk ten minutes to the museum. Check the connection and walking time before your trip.
The Palazzo Chiericati, designed by Palladio in 1550 for Girolamo Chiericati, houses the civic museum. It preserves and displays more than 35,000 works from the 13th to the 20th century, including paintings, sculptures, prints and applied arts. The museum is accessible to people with disabilities; the displays may change, so check the current visitor arrangements in advance.
The Museo del Risorgimento e della Resistenza is housed in Villa Guiccioli on Colle Ambellicopoli. In 1848, the people of Vicenza resisted there in defence of the city. The collection explores memories of events and figures in Italian history connected with Vicenza. This museum is also accessible to people with disabilities; check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
The Gallerie d’Italia – Palazzo Leoni Montanari permanently displays three art collections belonging to the bank; check the current presentation before your visit. The Jewellery Museum is one of Europe’s first museums devoted exclusively to jewellery and goldsmithing. Vicenza therefore offers different ways to explore art and history, from Palladio’s designs to goldsmithing.
Monte Berico and Religious History
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Monte Berico was built following Marian apparitions on 7 March 1426 and 1 August 1428 on the hill south of Vicenza. In 1578, Palladio enlarged the sanctuary with a large square nave. From the historic centre, you can reach it on foot either via Viale X Giugno or by taking the Scalette di Monte Berico, with its 192 steps. The two routes offer different ways to get there; check the route conditions before travelling.
The Museum of Sacred Art at Monte Berico contains more than 500 artefacts from the 14th to the 21st century. Its collection includes Greek and Russian icons, as well as icons in the Neo-Byzantine and post-Byzantine styles. As displays may be rearranged, it is advisable to check the current presentation before your visit.
The Church of Santa Corona also offers a glimpse into the city’s history: founded in 1270, it was the centre of a Dominican monastic complex. Its crypt contains the Valmarana Chapel, which Palladio designed for Antonio Valmarana in 1576. The church can be visited as part of the city’s museum system with an admission ticket, or during religious services. Check the current visiting arrangements; the church’s visiting policy does not automatically indicate whether the chapel is accessible.
Local Cuisine and Green Spaces
Bacalà alla vicentina is a local speciality developed by the people of Vicenza and has been part of the culinary tradition for more than 500 years. This tradition offers a culinary counterpoint to the city’s buildings and collections; recipes and individual restaurants may vary.
For a green break, Campo Marzo and the Giardini Salvi are among Vicenza’s historic parks. In Parco Querini, a tree-lined avenue leads to a small temple surrounded by greenery. Nearby is Lake Fimon, a lake basin of considerable natural and archaeological interest. Alongside architecture and museums, visitors to Vicenza can include parks and the surrounding landscape as distinct themes in their travel plans.
When looking for a hotel in Vicenza, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: Palladian architecture and museums, the religious history of Monte Berico, or a mix of culture, cuisine and parks. This lets you plan around the experiences you want to enjoy in the city.
