Discover Cassola: Churches, Art and Local Festivals
Accommodation in Cassola
If you are looking for a hotel in Cassola, the churches of San Marco and San Zeno, their architectural and artistic history, and local events can help shape your travel plans. Cassola combines early historical records with churches whose construction phases and works of art can be traced through specific dates and details. A flower festival, an asparagus event and described cycling routes also offer ideas for planning your stay.
Churches, Architectural History and Art
The first written record of Cassola is a deed of donation dated 29 April 1085. It mentions a castle and a chapel. Local tradition relates that, following the donation, a tower-like building resembling a castle was erected in the countryside around Cassola. Inside was a chapel dedicated to the Evangelist Mark. The castle and chapel therefore feature both in the early history of the town and in later accounts of this site.
The present-day church of San Marco was built from the ground up between 1746 and 1766. Its classically designed façade has a central entrance portal and an inscription recording the building’s chronology. The church also houses Jacopo dal Ponte’s altarpiece depicting Saint Mark in glory between Saints John the Evangelist and Bartholomew. The work was installed there on 21 December 1573. The information about the altarpiece and the present-day church thus marks two different points in history.
A rector of San Zeno is documented on 1 October 1427. The first construction phase of the present-day church began on 6 February 1746; it was consecrated on 29 June 1847. Its neoclassical façade is defined by four pilasters with Corinthian capitals. Pilasters are flat, column-shaped features attached to a wall; capitals form their uppermost section. These features can therefore be understood without specialist knowledge.
Frescoes on the nave vault depict the Glory of Saint Zeno and the Assumption of Mary. The sacristy was located in the original small church and was to be preserved as evidence of the original wall structure. San Zeno underwent extensive restoration from 2014 to 2017 after numerous cracks were found in the vault. The existing decorations were also restored during the work.
Festivals with Different Themes
The Festa dei Fiori in San Giuseppe di Cassola is a traditional market event focused on horticulture and the care of green spaces. It is traditionally held on the Sunday before 19 March. Check the specific date for each edition. In 2025, the event was described as traditional and as having been held in San Giuseppe for 39 years.
Another event celebrates white asparagus: the Festa dell'asparago in San Zeno is a festival centered on this vegetable. Dates and programme may vary. If you want to plan your trip specifically around this event, check the details for the relevant edition.
