Montegalda brings together architectural history, art, gardens and landscape. Castello Grimani Sorlini, villas, an altarpiece dating from 1606 and ancient trees lend the town distinctive cultural and landscape features. If you are looking for a hotel in Montegalda, you can choose your destination based on whether you are especially interested in historic architecture, gardens, literature or cycling. The themes have different focal points: from individual buildings and works of art to landscapes and outdoor activities.

River Landscapes and Industrial History

The Bacchiglione runs along the edge of Montegalda. The landscape also includes remnants of historic woodland and ancient trees. Some of the oaks are among the longest-lived in the province of Vicenza. The river at the edge of town and the ancient trees represent different ways of experiencing nature. If you take the landscape into account alongside buildings when choosing a destination, both contribute to the picture of Montegalda.

The Colzè navigation lock was built in 1870 with two rows of lock gates. Today, it is regarded as an interesting example of engineering and a testament to industrial archaeology. Its technical focus sets it apart from the villas and churches: here, the lock gates and the history of water engineering take centre stage.

Castles, Villas and Gardens

Castello Grimani Sorlini overlooks Montegalda and has more than 1,000 years of military and civil history. Its position above the town and its long history define different aspects of the castle.

Montegalda Castle has a fully preserved, still-functioning drawbridge dating from the 14th century. Its park includes cypress trees, exotic trees, an orangery and an Italian garden. The drawbridge and park offer different points of interest: historic engineering on the one hand, landscaped gardens on the other.

The villas also offer different ways to explore architecture. Villa Gualdo draws on and imitates Palladian architecture. Villa Feriani was built in the second half of the 17th century on the site of an earlier 15th-century building. Villa Gualdo therefore centres on its architectural references, while Villa Feriani highlights the sequence of two building phases.

Rare exotic plants grow in the park of Villa Fogazzaro-Roi-Colbachini, including bald cypresses, cedars and Japanese pagoda trees. Unlike the castle park, with its orangery and Italian garden, the focus here is on individual plant species. For garden enthusiasts, the two park descriptions offer different points of interest: designed garden styles and distinctive trees.

Art, Literature and Cycling

A valuable altarpiece by Alessandro Maganza, dating from 1606, can still be found in the apse of the Church and Monastery of San Marco. The Museo del Fogazzaro features a museum route with first editions and translations of the famous novelist’s most important literary works. A single dated work of art and a literary collection thus represent two distinct cultural themes.

The Ciclovia del Bacchiglione follows the embankment throughout and runs almost entirely along a paved cycle path. It is considered easy and safe, and is also suitable for families with children. Cycling thus adds a distinct, clearly described travel option to the cultural themes.
