Breganze: Churches, Villas and Craftsmanship
Accommodation in Breganze
Explore Breganze in several ways: along the streets of the town, on paths amid greenery and vineyards, and through its churches, villas and workshops. The routes each focus on different aspects. As you plan your stay, consider whether the town’s architecture, the Church of Santo Stefano, historic workshops or its wine tradition will shape your view of Breganze.
Routes through the town and its surroundings
The Centro e Ville route takes you along the streets of Breganze and past the church, the bell tower, villas and dovecotes. It brings together several of the town’s buildings in a single route. The Collina Santo Stefano route offers a different focus: it leads to the Church of Santo Stefano, past historic villas and along scenic paths amid greenery and vineyards. Here, the church as a destination and the surrounding landscape take centre stage.
The Opifici route starts in the town centre and follows historic Via Castelletto to the Antica Officina Radin Museum. Along the way are workshops, former workplaces and villas. The route thus connects the town centre with a destination that represents Breganze’s history of craftsmanship. The Antica Officina Radin is a museum of local craftsmanship; its place on this route can be combined with a visit to other traces of work from the past.
There is a cycling route for visitors on bikes from Breganze via Mirabella and Maragnole. It follows small country roads and returns to Breganze along a new cycle path. Its out-and-back itinerary differs from the routes that include churches, villas or workshops as specific destinations.
Churches, the bell tower and historic buildings
The bell tower of Breganze is 90 metres high and offers 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape. A tradition maintained there for more than 50 years involves bell concerts on weekends, religious holidays and at major events. The parish church also has a long history: by the end of the 13th century, it was already dedicated to Santa Maria and housed the tomb of the Pagello family.
Breganze Cathedral dates back to the 13th century and houses seven altars dedicated to saints, as well as an altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Church of San Valentino dates from 1646; its features include frescoes by the Mattielli and a Baroque altar made of Vicenza stone. At the Chiesetta di Santo Stefano, Benedictine origins meet formally Gothic Revival features that define its present appearance.
Villas, dovecotes and the history of craftsmanship
Breganze’s manor villas stand on hills and are surrounded by extensive parkland. One example is the 17th-century Villa Monza-Savardo, which has a manor chapel and a dovecote and is surrounded by a centuries-old park with rows of old vines. The town’s many dovecotes also have their own historical significance. They were built only after the mid-15th century, during the Venetian period, and served as representative buildings for wealthy landowning families.
The Antica Officina Radin preserves the characteristic layout of craft workshops that operated between the 1920s and the years following the Second World War. Restored machines and working equipment remain on display. The Museo del Maglio di Breganze showcases another aspect of craftsmanship: it preserves machinery that is fully intact, operational and powered exclusively by water. Live demonstrations show the forging of red-hot iron and the grinding of tools on a water-powered grindstone. The Maglio Tamiello, meanwhile, is considered a rare witness to Vicenza’s proto-industry of the 16th century.
Breganze DOC and the wine tradition
The Breganze DOC designation of origin is also part of the town’s profile. It is one of the first DOC designations recognised in Veneto and celebrates both indigenous and international grape varieties. The wine tradition thus encompasses varieties of local origin as well as internationally widespread grapes.
