Carrè: History, Churches and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Carrè
Carrè combines a long local history with religious traditions, rural heritage and marked routes. If you are planning a stay, these different features can help you choose your destination: the castle tells the story of the medieval past, while the churches and recurring festivals reveal other aspects of the town. The trails and the western landscape also offer practical ways to get to know Carrè better.
The History of Castello di Carrè
A castle on the hill above Carrè is documented in church records dating from 1030 to 1038. Castello di Carrè belonged to the Capra family for several centuries. In the early 16th century, the Republic of Venice had the castle demolished. This sequence of events traces the story from the medieval castle to the political decision that brought it to an end.
However, you should understand the castle as part of the town’s history: the surviving records tell of its presence on the hill, its long association with the Capra family and its demolition.
Churches and Religious Traditions
The foundation stone of the Chiesa Arcipretale was laid on 1 March 1874; its solemn inauguration took place on 19 March 1878. Its façade is designed in the Renaissance style and features two bell chambers.
Madonna della Fratta is the destination of frequent popular processions. The occasions mentioned include its feast day and 24 September; the specific procession dates may vary. On special occasions, paintings and items offered for charitable purposes are displayed in the Chiesa di Santa Lucia. If you are planning to visit the church, check access arrangements in advance.
Festivals and Rural Heritage
The Festa del Ringraziamento has been celebrated in Carrè every year in late October for more than sixty years. It marks the end of the agricultural season. The specific programme may change from year to year.
The Corte dei Bertoldo also offers a glimpse into the town’s architectural heritage. It comprises an arched gateway, a large square courtyard and six houses. The Vecchia latteria, a cheese dairy, was probably established around 1880.
