Sovizzo: Hills and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Sovizzo
Sovizzo combines rolling hills and cultural heritage with local traditions. Geology, waterways and changing vegetation shape the view of the area; villas, the church of Sovizzo Colle and paths along the Retrone add history, art and opportunities for activity. You can therefore shape your stay around whichever you would like to focus on: natural features, history or local culture.
Hills, Rock and Water
The hills of Sovizzo reach 200 metres in height and consist mainly of sedimentary limestone. They formed 40 to 20 million years ago in a marine environment, were later uplifted and shaped by erosion. Their formation in the sea was thus followed by uplift and erosion—a long process that explains the hills’ present-day shape.
The hills alternate between wooded areas and broad clearings. Moisture-loving plants grow on the cooler, damp slopes and in the valleys, while heat-loving species are found in more exposed locations. Different plant communities are therefore associated with varying moisture levels and exposure.
The waterways also shape the landscape. The Mezzarolo flows into the Onte, which in turn flows into the Valdiezza. The Retrone rises in the eastern-draining plain of Sovizzo. Both the course of these waterways and the source of the Retrone are therefore part of the landscape.
Villas and History
Villa Bissari-Curti, in the centre of Sovizzo, was built in the second half of the 16th century. A scenographic theatre in the antique style was among the additions made later. Its construction history thus includes an initial building period and a later extension.
Villa Curti has a 30,000-square-metre park. Its features include restored frescoes, historic statues made of Vicenza stone and an open-air amphitheatre with two early Christian urns.
The church of Sovizzo Colle was incorporated into a fortification built in the Middle Ages, which was destroyed in the 13th century. The church houses 17th-century works of art as well as sculptures by Marinali. Here, the history of the medieval fortification meets works of art from a later period.
A megalithic funerary and ritual complex dating from the Copper Age is preserved in situ and can be seen from outside as a permanent archaeological site.
Trails and Natural Landscapes
Opened in 2018, the Sovizzo–Creazzo cycle path follows the course of the Retrone and offers a route for pedestrians and cycling enthusiasts. It is one way to experience the landscape on foot or by bicycle along the river.
Another route passes through Vigo and leads to the castles of Giulietta and Romeo and the Spurghe. These are passages enclosed by rocks, set in a wild and striking natural landscape. The rock formations provide a different accent from the wooded areas and broad clearings of the hills.
Local Tradition
The Feast of the Madonna del Rosario is the community festival of Sovizzo Colle and takes place on the first Sunday in October. Religious celebrations are accompanied by leisure activities and food offerings. Traditional dishes include Bìgoli co’ l’arna, a pasta dish with duck sauce. If you plan to time your trip to coincide with the festival, check the exact dates in advance.
