History, religion and architecture
The Museum of the Covolo di Butistone and the Great War is located in Cismon del Grappa’s old town hall and comprises three sections. Covolo del Butistone is an ancient military fortification, documented since 1004. The Scale di Primolano fortification also tells the story of the region: it originally surrounded Castello della Scala, which dates to 1260 and is believed to have older origins. The fortification was used to control the border between the Canale di Brenta, Valsugana and Feltrino. In 2017, after five years of work, it was restored and enhanced.
The veneration of the Madonna del Pedancino in Cismon dates back to 1748 and is linked to a devastating flood on 18 August that year. The parish church of Cismon del Grappa underwent extensive restoration around the middle of the 18th century. It retains an ornate presbytery and a 16th-century bell tower. The site of San Marco in Cismon is documented from 1173. A chapel in today’s Church of Santa Maria e San Marco houses a wooden statue of the Madonna del Pedancino and a painting by Girolamo Da Ponte.
The former Lancia factory is a notable example of industrial architecture from the mid-20th century. Its design combines elements of the early 20th-century tradition with innovations of Rationalism. There is no other example of this architectural period in the Canale di Brenta; the factory is a rare example in the upper Vicentino.
