Zovencedo: Hiking, Landscape and History
Accommodation in Zovencedo
Zovencedo in the Berici Hills combines specific hiking routes with a distinctive landscape and traces of different eras. Two questions can help shape your travel plans: Which route suits your timeframe, and which natural or historical themes would you like to explore? The trails, river landscape and cultural history each offer a different focus.
Choose a Hike and Route
The Sentiero di Zovencedo starts in the town centre. The route is 9 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of 3 to 4 hours; an alternative shortens it to 6.5 kilometres. The trail leads to the settlement of Calto and the remains of an old lignite mine in Val Gazzo. When planning, compare the stated duration of the 9-kilometre route with the shorter distance of the alternative. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The Altavia dei Berici can be completed on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Stage 16 runs from Zovencedo to Pozzolo and offers panoramic views over Valle del Gazzo. The Sentiero di San Gottardo offers a different perspective: from the trail, you can view from the outside the main extraction site for white Vicenza stone. This stone is a variety known as “Pietra di San Gottardo”.
The Liona Valley and Nature
The River Liona rises in Zovencedo, flows down through the valley and continues towards the Po Valley. The tourist area guide “La Valle della Liona” covers both Zovencedo and Val Liona. A municipal tourism page, updated in 2024, states that the guide is available digitally on the websites of the participating municipalities, with printed copies available from municipal offices and Pro Loco offices.
The Grotta di San Gottardo is also part of the Berici Hills’ natural landscape: it is one of the longest natural caves in the area. Together with the course of the Liona, it illustrates different aspects of the municipality’s landscape—a cave as a geological feature and a river that flows downhill from Zovencedo towards the Po Valley.
Archaeology, History and Stone
The Grotta de Nadale is a Palaeolithic archaeological site in Zovencedo. It is associated with Neanderthal settlement around 70,000 years ago. Its only surviving archaeological layer documents the presence of Neanderthals in the Berici area. The Castrum of Zovencedo belongs to a much later period: it was first mentioned in 1158 in an imperial document issued by Frederick I.
Casa rupestre La Sengia adds the history of earlier residential use of a quarry setting. It was built at the entrance to an old quarry and inhabited until the 1960s by a family with many children. La Sengia also contains a former quarry secured by the municipality, where traces of the original underground extraction techniques have been preserved. The Museo della Pietra is housed inside a quarry in La Sengia. Together, these places give stone quarrying and life in La Sengia a distinct place alongside Zovencedo’s archaeological and medieval history.
Osteria Imbusà
A municipal listing from 2023 describes Osteria Imbusà at Via Gazzo 2 as open to visitors or accessible by reservation. Check that it is currently operating before planning a visit.
