Cornedo Vicentino: Churches, Art and History
Accommodation in Cornedo Vicentino
Cornedo Vicentino can be explored through different cultural layers: churches recall religious history, individual works of art make their own mark, and archaeological finds take us further back in time. When planning your trip, this variety is primarily a matter of personal interest. San Rocco, S. Andrea, S. Sebastiano and San Giovanni Battista do not represent the same period or history; their different details offer several ways to discover the town.
Churches and their stories
The parish church of San Rocco was built after the plague as an expression of gratitude that the population had been spared from danger. This origin gives the building a connection to Cornedo’s community-centred religious history. In Cereda, the Chiesa di S. Andrea was the first religious building to be elevated to the status of a parish church, from the 13th century onward. The two churches offer different historical points of reference: San Rocco centres on gratitude after the plague, while S. Andrea reflects the hamlet’s early ecclesiastical status.
The Chiesa di S. Sebastiano combines a distinctive location with a construction history that should be treated with caution. It stands on the hill of the same name above Cornedo; the large forecourt offers a view over the valley. The church is believed to have been built in 1469. The interpretation that it was built on the site of Cornedo’s former castle also remains a conjecture. Inside the church is a partially gilded wooden sculpture dating from 1514, depicting the Madonna with Jesus, or the enthroned Madonna. The site thus brings together its location, a possible earlier history and a dated work of art.
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista highlights a later chapter in the history of the churches: it was consecrated on 11 September 1966. It also houses a depiction of the birth of John the Baptist by Alessandro Maganza. The consecration dates the history of the building, while the named painting adds its own art-historical note. Together with the older churches, this comparison shows how different architectural and artistic histories coexist in Cornedo.
Archaeological traces
The archaeological perspective extends beyond church history. At L'UOMO DELLA ROCCIA, a large stone pillar is set within a natural amphitheatre. Excavations near the site between 2013 and 2019 showed that the amphitheatre had been inhabited since the Neolithic period. This extends the timeline far back: while the churches illustrate individual religious, architectural and artistic chapters, the focus here is on the long history of settlement. Visitors interested in the past can thus place these different time horizons in context.
Gravel route and regional wine connection
The Salita alla Croce del Sojo gravel bike route reaches Cornedo Vicentino. Trail and surface conditions can change, so check the latest information before setting out. The Strada del vino Lessini Durello is associated with a part of the municipality that belongs to the Lessini Durello DOC. This connection to wine adds another regional perspective to the cultural themes.
A municipal facility
The Biblioteca Comunale is a public library and part of the community’s shared heritage. As a municipal facility, it differs from the churches, works of art and archaeological traces. Check the opening hours in advance, as they may change.
