Albettone, in the Province of Vicenza, brings together several chapters of its local history: villas from different centuries, churches and the Bisatto Canal as an ancient transport route. For travelers choosing a destination based on their cultural interests, architecture, art, religious history and historic water transport each offer a different focus. This allows you to weigh which aspects matter most for your trip.

Villas shaped by renovation and art

Villa Campiglia is a historic 15th-century building and a Neo-Gothic renovation of the original villa. On the ground floor, a hall from the older building has been preserved, with frescoes painted by Giovanni Antonio Fasolo around 1560. This building brings together several distinct periods: its 15th-century origins, the artistic work from the 16th century and its Neo-Gothic transformation. If you are interested in architecture, this sequence offers a concrete comparison between the building’s history and its surviving features. The hall brings 16th-century art into the picture, while the Neo-Gothic renovation adds a later architectural touch.

In Lovolo di Albettone stands Villa Ricci Manfredini, which dates from the 15th century and is also known as Villa Erizzo Schiavinato and Ca’ Brusà. Villa Prosdocimi, also known as Ca’ Giustina, has a different architectural history: the eclectic building stands on the slope of Monte Castellario and was created in the 19th century by renovating older buildings. At Ricci Manfredini, the emphasis is on its dating and different names; Prosdocimi is distinguished by its eclectic style and its origins in earlier buildings. The churches add their own history to these time periods. San Michele in Lovolo already existed in the 16th century. The small Chiesetta dei Santi Vito e Modesto in Lovertino is documented as early as 753. This chronological comparison shows how far apart the churches’ documented dates are.

The Bisatto Canal and the Colombara

The Bisatto Canal runs through Albettone. It is an ancient transport route, dug around the 12th century to serve as a communication link. The Colombara, which has survived to this day, stands beside the canal. During Venetian rule, it served as a watchtower for the port of Albettone. Together, the canal and tower represent connected aspects of local history: the waterway as a transport link and the tower’s role as a lookout at the port. The chronology also helps put this history in context: the canal was built around the 12th century, and the Colombara served as a watchtower during a later period of rule. Along with the villas and churches, this perspective broadens the focus from architecture and religious history to the waterway’s former role in transport.
