Roana offers points of interest for travelers who want to combine cultural history with hiking or cycling routes. The Museo della Cultura Cimbra focuses on the history of the population groups of the Altopiano dei 7 Comuni; other topics range from the history of the front during the First World War to routes through forests and pastures. For your planning, you can consider the museum and the range of routes as different points of interest.

Cultural History and the First World War

The Museo della Cultura Cimbra is located near Piazza Santa Giustina. It is dedicated to preserving the ancient history of the population groups of the Altopiano dei 7 Comuni. Exhibits include historical photographs of Roana, as well as traditional tools used in agriculture, cheesemaking, and the processing of wool and hemp. The exhibition therefore includes both images of Roana and tools from several fields of work. If you want to explore the cultural heritage of the Altopiano’s population groups, the museum’s focus offers a clear thematic starting point.

A distinct chapter in the area’s history dates to the First World War. As a result of the Austro-Hungarian offensive “Straefexpedition,” a front line divided the municipality of Roana for more than two years. It ran from west to east along the Torrente Assa from June 25, 1916, until the end of the First World War. The history of the front adds a specific historical context for Roana to the museum’s focus.

Hiking Trails and Routes

Roana is one of the 24 municipalities participating in the Alta Via Grande Guerra project. More than 200 kilometers of additional hiking trails branch off from the Alta Via. They lead to museums, memorials, forts, and military cemeteries. For hikers interested in history, these routes connect trails with a variety of historical destinations.

The Via delle Malghe offers a different focus. It connects 88 public mountain huts via numerous hiking and cycling routes. The trails pass through forests and pastures in the municipalities of Asiago, Enego, Foza, Gallio, Lusiana Conco, Roana, and Rotzo. The Via therefore extends beyond Roana. The Alta Via leads to historical destinations; the Via delle Malghe includes mountain huts and trails through forest and pasture areas.
