Bassano Del Grappa: Bridge, Museums and History
Accommodation in Bassano Del Grappa
Bassano Del Grappa lies on the banks of the Brenta River, at the foot of Monte Grappa. Its cultural highlights include Ponte Vecchio, collections from different periods and a walkway along historic walls. Ponte Vecchio is also known as Ponte degli Alpini and has been a national monument since June 2019. The history of its construction, art and the memory of wars each offer a different way to experience the city.
Walls, a history of protection and views
The Camminamento del Castello degli Ezzelini runs along walls that have protected the Church of Santa Maria in Colle and the residents of Bassano since at least 1150. The connection between the walls and the church gives the route its historical context. At the end is a viewpoint overlooking the Brenta and the Ponte di Palladio. This route thus brings together the history of the fortifications and a direct view of the river and the structure. Public access is scheduled from April 25 until the end of October in 2026. Check the current access conditions before your visit.
Art across several periods
The Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa houses the largest collection of works by Jacopo Da Ponte and his workshop. At the same time, its collections span from prehistory and the Renaissance to contemporary masters. The collection therefore combines a particular focus on Jacopo Da Ponte with a much broader chronological range. The museum is housed in the former San Francesco monastery complex. This adds a specific architectural connection to the art collection, distinct from the fortification history of the Camminamento.
Remembering the World Wars
The Museo ANA Montegrappa focuses on life in the trenches during the First and Second World Wars. Its collection includes military artefacts and historical records, including helmets, aerial bombs, shrapnel and bayonets. These objects belong to the museum’s clearly defined subject area. By contrast, the Museo Civico’s collection ranges from prehistory to contemporary masters and includes works by Jacopo Da Ponte and his workshop. The two museums thus differ distinctly: one centres on life in the trenches and wartime records, while the other presents a collection spanning multiple periods.
Palace and bridge
The Poli Grappa Museum is housed in a 15th-century palace opposite the historic wooden Ponte Vecchio. Its location directly opposite the bridge creates a clear spatial connection. The Museo Civico, housed in the former San Francesco monastery complex, offers a different building context. Those interested in the architecture of the museum sites will find two distinct historic buildings: a palace and a former monastery complex.
Three different historical references
The dates associated with Bassano Del Grappa also relate to different aspects: the Poli Grappa Museum’s palace dates from the 15th century; the walls along the Camminamento have protected the church and residents since at least 1150; and Ponte Vecchio has been a national monument since June 2019. These details help distinguish the age of the buildings, the history of protection and the monument status. They offer different historical perspectives on the city, rather than focusing on just one period.
