If you’re looking for hotels in Bolzano Vicentino, you can plan your stay around local highlights: frescoes by Ubaldo Oppi, Palladian villa architecture, the Tesina and Astico river landscapes, and a local fish specialty. For active days, two routes of different lengths take centre stage: a 16.5-kilometre stage of the Cammino Rigoni Stern and the five-kilometre course of the Marcia dei 4 Mulini.

Art, Church and History

The Pieve di Santa Maria preserves frescoes by Ubaldo Oppi, painted by the artist in 1934–1935. The church’s origins are thought to date back to the 5th or 6th century. This means many centuries separate the presumed date when the Pieve was founded from the frescoes. The Chiesa Arcipretale di Santa Maria preserves Oppi’s only fully intact fresco cycle.

The Galleria Municipale Ubaldo Oppi displays a permanent exhibition of collections of his preparatory drawings, made in charcoal for his frescoes. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit. Bolzano Vicentino is also home to the Museo diffuso d'arte religiosa “Ubaldo Oppi”, a decentralised museum of religious art.

Villa Valmarana Rossi offers another glimpse into the town’s architectural history: Palladio designed it around 1563 for Gianfrancesco Valmarana. A road ran through Bolzano Vicentino along its entire length and helped foster a lively market, particularly with Vicenza. Archaeological traces also form part of the town’s history: finds near the Chiesetta dei SS. Fermo e Rustico in the hamlet of Crosara attest to a Roman presence in the area around the chapel.

River Landscapes and Routes

The Tesina runs through the municipality of Bolzano Vicentino from north to south and rises from a spring near Bressanvido. Villa Chiericati Terreran is also set in the landscape of Bolzano Vicentino, just a few steps from the Tesina. These details offer different perspectives on the town’s connection to the river: the Tesina’s course through the municipal area and the villa’s location close to the water.

The Cammino Rigoni Stern includes a 16.5-kilometre stage from Bolzano Vicentino to Breganze. It runs mainly along the banks or embankments of the Tesina and Astico rivers, as well as along municipal roads and paths. The route therefore combines several specifically named types of path; its length and course are useful points of reference when planning a longer stage.

By comparison, the Marcia dei 4 Mulini course is considerably shorter at five kilometres. The 2024 edition was accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs. For a later edition, check whether the same level of accessibility applies.

A Local Fish Specialty

Avannotto di Bolzano Vicentino is a local fish specialty. The young fish are either fried in a pan or—at twelve months of age or when they measure 10 to 15 centimetres—prepared as “saor”, a sweet-and-sour Venetian-style marinade. The two preparation methods and the age or size specification describe a specific local tradition, adding a culinary dimension to the town’s cultural and landscape heritage.
