Discover Sossano
Accommodation in Sossano
Sossano brings together sacred architectural heritage, regional memorabilia and a hiking area north of the built-up town centre. These themes offer different perspectives to help you plan your trip: chapel and church architecture, the Museo Civico and its connections to the world wars and traditional rural life, and the regional GB1 route. You can decide whether you’d most like to discover Sossano through its architectural heritage, regional history or an excursion and hiking area.
Sacred architecture and art
The Chiesetta dell’Olmo, also known as Beata Vergine dell’Aiuto, is an octagonal chapel with a centralised plan. Giorgio Massari built it in its present form between 1727 and 1734. The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo offers a different historical perspective: designed by Sebastiano Bazzetta, it was completed and consecrated in 1882 and is in the Neo-Palladian style. An 18th-century building and a 19th-century church thus stand as distinct historical reference points. Inside the church is also a stone shrine containing the Cristo morto, a work by Niccolò da Venezia.
A museum spanning the world wars and rural life
The Museo Civico “Storia - Memoria” in Colloredo di Sossano houses around 600 objects across two subject areas. One focuses on documents and memorabilia from the First and Second World Wars; the other, on numerous objects relating to traditional rural life in the Basso Vicentino. Memories of the world wars are thus presented alongside records of rural life. For those who want to understand Sossano through more than its buildings, the museum offers an additional perspective on regional everyday history.
The museum also displays objects relating to the origins of the renowned S. Michele di Sossano ham factory. These include a bas-relief depicting the ham production cycle, a counter with ham presses, and the famous ham basket. The relief illustrates the production process, while the counter, presses and basket complement the theme with tangible objects. The connection to the ham factory links the depiction of production to the museum’s regional history themes.
An architectural detail of the villa
Villa Loschi Gazzetta preserves a central Early Renaissance bifora. Its decorations feature oak leaves and bees—a precisely described motif that brings architectural history and decorative design together in a single building element. The villa is freely accessible during activities, events and functions held there.
Hiking area and regional orientation
For those who want to include hiking in their trip alongside churches and the museum, Monte della Croce offers an excursion and hiking area north of Sossano’s built-up town centre. This adds an outdoor activity dimension to the cultural themes.
The GB1 route offers a regional perspective: it passes through seven municipalities in the Basso Vicentino—Campiglia dei Berici, Sossano, Orgiano, Asigliano Veneto, Pojana Maggiore, Noventa Vicentina and Agugliaro. Sossano is therefore part of a route that takes in several municipalities in the region. When planning your trip, you can choose between specific local buildings and collections and a broader regional overview.
