On the shores of Lake Como, at the end of Viale Guglielmo Marconi, stands the Tempio Voltiano. This monumental neoclassical building is associated with a prominent scientist from Como. It provides a striking starting point for a trip that brings together architecture, art and walks through the city. You can reach the Tempio Voltiano on foot; from the Lungolario Trento bus stops, it is 450 m, or 6 minutes away, from Como Lago station, 900 m, or 12 minutes away, and from Como San Giovanni station, 800 m, or 12 minutes away.

Art and Architecture in Como

In the city center, the Broletto stands between the cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace. The medieval palace later acquired Gothic additions and is now used as an exhibition venue. Its different building phases give the structure its own character: alongside its medieval layout, the later Gothic elements are also part of its appearance. Here, you can encounter architectural history in a place that also hosts exhibitions.

The Pinacoteca civica is housed in the 17th-century Palazzo Volpi. There, you can see paintings and sculptures dating from the Middle Ages to the present day. If you have limited mobility or use a wheelchair, the Pinacoteca is accessible via ramps and a lift. A visit combines art from several centuries with a glimpse inside a historic building.

Church visits in Como sometimes also require specific planning. A visit to the Church of San Giacomo and the opportunity to listen to the organ are available on request; availability depends on arrangements with the diocese. At Como Cathedral Basilica, visitors must follow a designated route. It follows the indicated plan and ends at the “della rana” exit (9). Visitor arrangements may change, so check the current route before your visit.

Castle, Views and Walking Routes

Castel Baradello is a fortification that Emperor Frederick Barbarossa had built on the remains of older structures. In the tower, you can visit a museum route featuring archaeological finds from excavations at Baradello. You can reach Castel Baradello on foot from Piazza San Rocco or Piazzale di Camerlata. The climb to the tower is via an external staircase that rises about 15 meters above the ground. Physical access conditions may change, so check them before your visit.

The Monumento ai Caduti offers a different perspective on the city: it is 30 meters high, and from the top you can look out over Como and the lake. The structure thus stands out alongside the medieval and neoclassical sights. Its height and views of the city and lake make it a distinctive destination during a visit to Como.

Villa Olmo is an outstanding example of monumental neoclassical architecture in Como. In August 2026, the villa was closed for restoration work. Visitor status may change, so check before your visit whether it is still closed. A panoramic walking route connects Villa Olmo, Villa del Grumello and Villa Sucota. Parco di Villa del Grumello also offers free access to panoramic paths and a botanical garden dedicated to Pliny the Elder. Around the villas, architecture, walking routes and garden art are all highlights.

Planning Your Trip to Como

If you are looking for a hotel in Como, you can use your planned visits as a guide: art and architectural history lead to the city’s sights, a walk connects three villas, and the historic Strada Regina or a boat are options for reaching other places around Lake Como. The Strada Regina is historic; traveling by boat is considered more convenient. Plan according to which of these themes matter most for your stay, and take note of any access conditions mentioned for individual visits.
