If you’re looking for a hotel in Breglia, hiking and local history can provide two different focuses for your stay. From Breglia, the Anello di San Domenico leads to a viewpoint; another hike reaches the Rifugio Menaggio. Religious buildings, Palazzo Lucini, and an archaeological find add historical destinations to the trails.

Hikes and trail features

The Anello di San Domenico circular trail leads from Breglia to a viewpoint near the Cappella di San Domenico, passing the Santuario della Madonna di Breglia along the way. It thus combines a viewpoint with a religious site on the trail.

The hike to the Rifugio Menaggio begins just beyond the village, by a small church. At first, it follows a paved road, then continues through the forest. After 15 minutes, you reach the refuge by way of a particularly scenic section. When comparing the trails, the Anello centers on the viewpoint and the Santuario, while the hike to the Rifugio is characterized by the change from paved road to forest and its scenic section.

The continuation of the excursion runs beneath birch trees and broom. By contrast, the hike to the Rifugio Menaggio first changes from road surface to landscape: the paved road gives way to forest.

Churches and historical landmarks

The Santuario della Madonna di Breglia stands atop Monte Gordola. It is a symbol of local devotion to the Virgin Mary and remains a pilgrimage destination to this day. The shrine was built in the second half of the 18th century and houses a venerated marble statue of the Madonna. Set amid greenery, the sanctuary is reached by a Way of the Cross featuring the “Mysteries of the Rosary.”

The Chiesa di San Gregorio Magno in Breglia dates in its present form to 1873. It replaced an older church that had been destroyed by a major landslide. Numerous works from the earlier church have survived, including a late 16th-century altarpiece depicting San Gregorio Magno, San Domenico, and San Francesco. The church’s history thus brings together its earlier artworks and its present-day 19th-century building.

Slightly above the Chiesa di San Gregorio stands Palazzo Lucini, also known as Palazzone. The villa was probably built in the early 19th century as a summer residence for the Lucini family. From 1892, it was the home of the poet Gian Pietro Lucini and his wife, Giuditta Cattaneo.

The Tomba tardoromana is located at the entrance to Breglia’s cemetery. This inhumation burial dates to the 6th century AD and was discovered in 1982 during cemetery expansion work. It consists of five granite slabs. The archaeological history of the village therefore reaches further back than the construction history of the Santuario, the church, and the villa.
