If you are looking for a hotel in Torno, you can get to know the village through its historic buildings and trails to notable sights. The old village center, the churches and Pietra Pendula represent different aspects of the area. The hiking trails also deserve a closer look: a circular hike to Pietra Pendula is quite different from the Strada Regia, a historic route about 35 kilometers long. These distinctions help you understand the local highlights and decide what you would like to focus on during your trip.

Lanes and Churches in the Old Village

The layout of the old village has been preserved in the historic center. The lanes are narrow and steep; in places, they open up to views of the lake. The view thus opens up at individual points between the houses. Both the paths through the village center and the changing views are part of its character.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is designated a national monument. It was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque-Gothic style. Its marble portal is a separate chapter in the building’s history: it dates from the late 15th century and is attributed to the Rodari school. The information about the church and the portal therefore refers to different periods; the later date of the portal should not be confused with the church’s construction date.

Santa Tecla overlooks the square by Torno’s harbor. Inside the church is a group of eight poplar-wood sculptures from the 16th century depicting the Lamentation of Christ. A visit brings two aspects together: the church’s location on the square and the carved ensemble inside. The figures are made of poplar wood and date from a different period than the marble portal of San Giovanni Battista.

Pietra Pendula and Montepiatto

Pietra Pendula presents a very different sight: the large erratic boulder has a mushroom-like shape and rests on a smaller piece of limestone. It is described as a Ghiandone erratic boulder from Val Masino, with a narrow base of local limestone. The visible contrast between the large rock and its narrower support makes its shape clear without needing a lengthy description.

Montepia tto lies above Torno. It is home to a chapel dedicated to the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth and a 16th-century monastery. The chapel and monastery give the place its own connection to art and architectural history. Together with Pietra Pendula, they are named destinations that can each be considered as a specific theme when planning a trip.

Hiking Trails on Different Scales

The circular hike to Pietra Pendula begins and ends at the Piazza Caronti parking lot in Torno. One hiking route reaches Montepiatto via the paved mule track “la drizza.” The starting point can be reached by bus on lines C30, C31 and C32, getting off at the Piazza Caronti stop, or by boat via Torno’s landing stage. If you plan to use one of these connections, check the timetable before setting out.

The Strada Regia is on a different scale: it is a historic route about 35 kilometers long that linked the villages on the eastern shore of the Triangolo Lariano, from Como to Bellagio. The section described as a walking route is almost entirely intended for pedestrians. The two routes therefore differ clearly: the circular hike centers on a specific starting and ending point and Pietra Pendula, while the Strada Regia is characterized by its approximate total length and the connections it provides between villages on the eastern shore.

These features offer different starting points when choosing a destination: the compact historic village center, the churches and their varied artworks, or a hike to a striking erratic boulder. You can use these themes to decide which experiences interest you most when looking for a hotel in Torno.
