Albiolo offers several different starting points for planning a trip: religious art and architectural history, festivals with a range of themes, and nature and hiking. You can therefore consider whether historic buildings, an event date or the route to Colle di San Maffeo should be the main focus of your stay.

Oratory and Local History

The Oratorio di San Martino is a rare example of smaller-scale Romanesque art in Albiolo. It is dated to the late 12th or early 13th century. Fresco cycles from the 15th century can be found on its interior and exterior walls. The building's origins and its frescoes thus reflect different historical layers of the same structure: its Romanesque beginnings and a later phase of painted decoration.

Today, the oratory is used as a church dedicated to Saint Anne and is a Marian shrine. Another historical landmark is Castello Odescalchi, a 17th- to 18th-century villa in the town centre that is privately owned. The two buildings therefore differ not only in age, but also in their current function and ownership status.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The Festa di Sant’Anna takes place in July; the oratory is a pilgrimage destination especially on this occasion. A sagra, or local festival, has also been held at the same time for around a hundred years. The 2024 Festa included a large amusement park and a much-anticipated fireworks display on the Saturday evening of the last week of July.

The Fiera di San Martino has a different focus and normally takes place in the second week of November. As an agricultural and food fair, it promotes cattle breeding. Exhibits include livestock as well as machinery and products for agriculture and animal husbandry. At the 2024 edition, visitors could enjoy Lombard dishes, the traditional Albiolo dessert “buscella” and “spada di San Martino”, a meat-based dessert created especially for the event. This highlights two distinct sides of local festivities: the religious tradition in July and the agricultural and culinary focus in November.

Nature and Hiking Trail

Albiolo is part of Parco Sorgenti del Torrente Lura, a local park of supra-municipal interest. It comprises eight municipalities in the Province of Como and aims to protect and enhance the natural area. Albiolo's wetland system is among the park's most significant wetlands. The park thus provides a supra-municipal framework, while the wetlands highlight the particular importance of Albiolo's natural environment.

For an active outing, the Sentiero Granfondo dei Longobardi climbs up to Colle di San Maffeo. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views across the Como and Varese area and the Swiss Prealps. Unlike the festivals, which shape the annual calendar and local community life, this trail centres on climbing to a viewpoint.
