Lurate Caccivio combines the natural setting of the Lura stream with religious architecture and industrial history. This gives you several clear focal points for planning your trip: Parco Custera, with its wetland and Kneipp path; buildings with different floor plans; and the history of the textile industry. The Ciclovia dei Laghi also passes through the municipality, placing the town on a longer cycling route.

The Lura Stream, Park and Kneipp Path

Parco Custera lies on the right bank of the Lura stream, within the built-up area of Lurate Caccivio. The park includes a wetland that serves as a flood-retention basin for the stream, and a Kneipp path. The path is considered a hydrotherapy route. The Kneipp treatment is intended for independent use and uses groundwater. Parco Custera therefore brings together landscape and water management with a hydrotherapy treatment: the wetland serves a retention function, while the Kneipp treatment uses groundwater.

A Cycling Route on a Regional Scale

The Ciclovia dei Laghi covers a different scale from the local park: the cycling route is 270 kilometres long and runs through the provinces of Varese, Como and Lecco. Within the Parco Sorgenti del Torrente Lura area, the route passes through Lurate Caccivio. For most of its length, it follows cycle paths or quiet side roads. The PLIS Sorgenti del Torrente Lura covers about 2,000 hectares across ten municipalities in the province of Como and protects several waterways north of Milan. For trip planning, this allows you to distinguish between the local natural setting and a cycling route spanning several provinces.

Churches and Historic Architectural Forms

Castello dell'Abate served primarily as the abbot's residence. Part of the tower and some of the abbot's reception rooms in the south wing have been preserved.

The present appearance of the Chiesa della Santissima Annunciata is largely the result of extensions made between 1873 and 1879. Its regular floor plan comprises three naves, a semicircular apse and chapels along the side aisles. The elaborately decorated façade features Ionic pilasters, a portal framed in stucco and set on Corinthian columns, and three arched windows.

Until 1583, San Martino was the only parish church of the ecclesiastical fiefdom of Luriate. Unlike the three-nave Chiesa della Santissima Annunciata, the Chiesa di San Martino has a single-nave body, a rectangular apse and five side niches. The church of San Luigi Gonzaga has four side chapels with marble altars; statues of saints stand in niches decorated with gilded mosaics.

The Chiesa della Natività di Maria Vergine, also known as Madonna De Lura, appears to have ancient origins. A document dating to 1095 reports that it was consecrated by Pope Urban II. The Oratory of Saints Peter and Paul in Caccivio was consecrated in 1574. A Roman necropolis with cremation burials was discovered in 1889 at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul; the tombs are dated to between 96 and 192 AD.

Industrial History and Getting There

The Tessiture Meccaniche Stucchi factory was founded in the 19th century and employed more than 1,000 people within just a few decades. The complex retains original features such as sawtooth roofs, fences with brick bands and several Liberty-style details. The number of employees conveys the scale of the operation, while the preserved features offer a distinct insight into the architectural side of the textile industry.

For train travel, the municipal visitor information lists Albate-Camerlata and Como S. Giovanni as railway stations. Buses and shuttle services are available from there for onward travel to Lurate Caccivio. Check train and connecting services before travelling.
