Caglio sits high on the slopes of Monte Palanzone. The village centers on a medieval old town and nature trails. You can shape your stay around architecture and sacred art, or chestnut forest and landscapes.

Village character and traces in stone

Narrow lanes, buildings with exposed stonework, arches, and courtyards define the medieval village. The work of local stonemasons can also be seen in stone doorways, carved stones, and paving. Here, stone is not just used for walls but also features in the details of the lanes and houses.

In the historic center is a stone game known as Filetto or Mulinello. It is an ancient game. Another historical trace is the Nevera, a traditional structure once used to store snow. In summer, the snow was used to keep food cool.

Churches, art, and local history

The Romanesque church of Santa Valeria preserves 14th-century frescoes. The figures depicted include the Madonna del Latte, as well as Santa Valeria with her two children, Gervasio and Protasio. The Santuario della Madonna di Campoè also preserves an image of the Madonna del Latte: she is shown between two angels playing musical instruments, and the image is dated 1508.

Along Viale Campoè, the Stations of the Cross chapels designed by Ottavio Cabiati line the route to the sanctuary. The parish church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio contains a Baroque altar in the form of a tempietto and a fine marble balustrade. The Cappella della Beata Vergine del Carmine, also known as Morti di Pianura, served as a hospital during plague epidemics.

Another stop in the village’s history is the house in Caglio where Giovanni Segantini lived from 1885 to 1886. It is part of the Percorso Segantini. Next to Casa Bianconi, a niche also contains a noteworthy 17th-century Madonna.

The Romanesque church of Saints Valeria and Vitale in the park of Villa Giuliani is a separate site: it is on private property and can only be visited on certain occasions.

Nature and trails

Just outside the village is the protected Oasi faunistica e botanica di Caglio. There, visitors can experience the natural habitat and local fauna. The animals include rabbits, chickens, donkeys, and sheep; various bird species are kept in a large aviary. The mix of animals may change over time.

The short Sentiero botanico Due Passi is generally accessible to everyone; very heavy snowfall is an exception. The botanical trail showcases the transition from a reforested area of conifers such as spruce and larch to a deciduous forest typical of this altitude. It first leads to a two-hundred-year-old beech tree, then to the Marian sanctuary of Campoè.

Caglio’s chestnut grove now has a few thousand trees. From the village, you can reach it on foot via Via Ai Monti in about 15 minutes. A comfortable path through the grove leads to Colma di Caglio in about an hour. These time estimates refer to two different sections: the approach from the village to the chestnut forest, and the route through the forest to Colma.

For a longer hike, there is also an architectural and nature route designed to be walked in about three hours; shorter options take around two hours. This is a different time estimate from the route through the chestnut grove to Colma.
