Schignano is an appealing destination for travelers who want to factor forest landscapes, hiking trails and local culture into their choice of accommodation. The area offers a distinct mix of experiences: alongside routes through forests and alpine pastures, there are mask traditions, church art and festivals. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on a hike, a seasonal event or the village’s cultural sites.

Forest Landscapes and Hiking Trails

The Foresta Regionale Valle Intelvi occupies Schignano’s upper natural amphitheater. The area covers about 82 hectares and lies almost entirely within the municipality. An extensive network of historic mule tracks leads to rural forestry buildings; along the trails, there are views of Lake Como and nearby Switzerland. The landscape is therefore defined both by the trails themselves and by reaching the scattered buildings.

La Conca di Schignano is a circular hiking trail that starts in Schignano and passes through alpine pastures and forests to the slopes of Sasso Gordona. The monumental beech tree at Alpe Fontanella is along the way. A peony known as the Rosa del Sasso also grows on Sasso Gordona. The Sentiero delle Espressioni, meanwhile, puts wood art at the heart of the experience: this artistic trail winds through the forest, where visitors can discover one carved wooden sculpture after another. Individual works of art may change over time.

The summit of Monte Comana, along the Sentiero delle Espressioni, offers views of Lake Como; visibility depends on the weather. To reach the trail, you can park in Posa and then walk for about 20 minutes toward Alpe Nava, where the trail begins. The route is considered easy. Check parking and trail conditions locally before planning your hike.

Masks, Wood Art and Events

The Carnevale di Schignano is staged as a theatrical contrast between the masked characters Bèi and brùt. Performances take place in the main square and the village’s lanes. The masks are hand-carved by local artists, and every carnival character wears one. As the dates vary from year to year, check them separately when planning your trip.

Boscultura also focuses on wood art, but in the forest: the traditional annual festival lasts a full week in early June. New sculptures are added to the trail during the festival. Around a dozen sculptors create their works directly in the forest; the number may vary from one edition to another. If you plan to visit Schignano for the event, check the specific dates for that year.

Village Scenery and Cultural Sites

Schignano’s lanes and small squares feature fountains, washhouses and portals considered examples of local stonework. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta has ancient origins; its layout and many of its features were extensively altered in the 16th and 17th centuries. The church contains a scagliola paliotto. Here, you can appreciate both craft details and the longer history of a religious building in the village scenery.

The Vetrina della Maschera contains historic masks from the Carnevale di Schignano and can be seen from outside. To visit inside, contact the La M.A.S.C.H.E.R.A. association in advance at info@lamascheraschignano.it; check the contact details before your visit. In Schignarot, the Cappella dei Calceta commemorates a settlement that was destroyed or abandoned after the 15th-century plague. Another cultural highlight is the annual Festa del Voto: a Baroque polychrome Pietà, referred to as a statue of the Madonna Addolorata, is carried through the village streets. The Roccolo del Messo is a rural building open to visitors on the hiking trail between Colma di Binate and Alpe Comana.
