Merone is characterized by its hilly terrain and waterways. Its natural and cultural sites offer different starting points when choosing where to stay: the Oasi di Baggero is part of the Parco Naturale della Valle del Lambro, the area along the shore of Lake Pusiano at Moiana in Merone has remained relatively close to its natural state, and the Lambro runs through the entire area. If you are looking for a hotel in Merone, you could first consider whether trails, lakeside scenery or local history should play a bigger role in your stay.

Nature Trails and Landscape

The Oasi di Baggero is a protected area within the Parco Naturale della Valle del Lambro. It covers 26 hectares across four municipalities in the Province of Como, including Merone. Within the Oasi, the Alta Via forms a circular route around the lakes and connects with the surrounding cycling and walking trails. The Sentiero della Buerga offers a different focus: this nature trail can be walked from Merone or Alserio, offers views of the lake and forest, and leads to the environmental education centre.

The surface is also worth considering when choosing a route. Some of the paths in the Oasi, including the Sentiero al Cavolto and the paths by the waterfall, are flat and have concrete or compacted-earth surfaces; these sections are suitable for wheelchairs. If you are looking for flat paths, these specifically named sections provide a practical guide.

At Moiana in Merone, the natural character of the shores of Lake Pusiano has been relatively well preserved. The area is characterized by successive vegetation zones, particularly stands of reeds and sedges. The lakeshore is thus notable for its lakeside vegetation, while the Oasi focuses on its circular route and nature trail. The Lambro flows between the hills and runs through the entire area of Merone. Together with the hilly terrain, it shapes the municipality’s landscape.

Cultural History in Merone

The area’s cultural history spans different buildings and periods. The Chiesa della Madonna del Rosario di Pompei in Merone dates back to the 17th century. The Ecomuseo dei Mulini on Via Mazzini is housed in a mill dating from 1722 that has been restored to full working order.

Until 1888, the Santuario della Beata Vergine del Rosario di Pompei served as the parish church for Moiana, Merone and part of Incino. Its former parish role thus extended beyond Merone. Merone Castle was destroyed in 1285 by the Della Torre during their war with the Visconti for control of Milan. The dates span different periods: the castle’s destruction in the 13th century, the construction of the mill in 1722 and the parish church’s role until 1888.
