Osteno-claino: Caves, Lakeshore and Art History
Accommodation in Osteno-claino
When planning a stay in Osteno-claino, the main themes you’ll encounter are landscape, art and architectural history. Osteno is on the southeastern shore of Lago Ceresio. There, the Torrente Lirone and the Telo meet and plunge into the Orrido di Osteno. The Torrente Santa Giulia drops about 70 metres towards the lake and contributed to the formation of the seven Grotte di Rescia over millions of years. Osteno also has a lakeside bathing area; check local conditions before your visit. The waterways, caves and historic sites offer different options for planning your trip.
Plan your visit to the Grotte di Rescia
A minimum visit of 30 minutes is recommended for the Grotte di Rescia. Guided tours last 60 to 90 minutes and are available daily with advance reservation. This gives you two different time frames to consider: the recommended minimum visit and the longer guided tour. If you plan to take a tour, book in advance and check your preferred date and time. There are two car parks at the caves. An unpaved car park on the provincial road is about 20 metres from the entrance; another is by the Grotte di Rescia campsite, about 100 metres from the caves. Check current parking conditions before setting out.
Claino: Art in the Village
Borgo Dipinto Claino is an open-air museum of art, history and architecture. You can follow the route on site using an app to scan QR codes. The historic centre of Claino features a cycle of Renaissance graffiti on the façades of houses. One specific example is at Via alla Fontana 4: the graffiti there depict Petrarch’s Triumphs and date to 1535. This offers a view ranging from the character of Borgo Dipinto to a work with a precise date.
Churches and sacred art
Sacred art can also be seen at several named sites. The Church of San Vincenzo was consecrated on 3 August 1510. The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Osteno houses a Madonna sculpture by Andrea Bregno di Righeggia. The Oratorio di Santa Maria delle Grazie in Barclaino is richly decorated with stucco and paintings. In the Oratorio di Santa Giulia, six frescoes framed by stucco depict episodes from the martyrdom of Saint Giulia. Each site offers a different focus, from a church with a recorded consecration date to a named sculpture, frescoes and richly decorated interiors.
Walks and outdoor activities
A 35-minute walk connects Borgo Dipinto Claino with the Oratorio di Santa Giulia and offers panoramic views of Lago Ceresio. At the destination, the six frescoes add an art-historical highlight to the walk. Check trail conditions locally before planning your walk.
Another activity is sport fishing at the mouth of the Torrente Telo in Claino con Osteno, within a 50-metre radius. Check local rules and any required permits before fishing. This lets you plan around different interests: a guided cave tour that requires a reservation, a walk with an art destination, or a visit to historic churches and oratories.
