Livo combines a historic village centre with trails leading into the mountain landscape. Sacred art, rural architecture and the surrounding chestnut woods give the village its distinctive character. When planning your trip, it is worth treating the village’s history and destinations around Dangri as separate points of interest: in Livo, churches, lanes and houses shape the village’s appearance; from Dangri, trails lead into several valleys.

Churches and historic village layout

One of the oldest historical landmarks is the Chiesa San Giacomo Vecchia, first mentioned in written records in 1297. Its frescoes date from different periods of the 16th century. The vault of the pronaos features scenes from Genesis dating to the second half of the century. The side walls and pillars of the nave contain numerous devotional frescoes from the first half of the century. They depict Mary, Christ, God the Father and saints from popular tradition. The Chiesa di San Giacomo Nuova is a separate church: it was built in the village centre in the 17th century.

The layout of the historic centre also reflects how the settlement developed over time. Old streets run parallel to one another, while lanes at right angles connect them, following the slope of the hillside. Typical rural houses are built of stone and feature wooden balconies and carved doors. Votive frescoes from the 16th century adorn their façades. Together, the street plan, architectural styles and frescoes offer a tangible picture of local architecture, rather than reducing Livo’s history to a single building.

Trails from Dangri and destinations in the mountain landscape

Dangri is an important starting point for finding your way to the trails. From there, hiking routes lead towards Val Darengo, its alpine lake and the wild Val di Bares. The canyoning route in Val di Bares also starts in Dangri, near Livo, and initially follows the path through Val di Bares to the starting point. The hiking destinations described here and access to the canyoning route are therefore distinct options involving different valleys and activities.

From Livo, access is via the road to Crotto Dangri; a €1 toll applies. After another 3 km, you can park in Dangri. On the way to Capanna Como, you reach the Madonna di Livo sanctuary, at an elevation of 745 m, after about a 30-minute walk. Capanna Como stands on a rocky spur south of Lago Darengo. Online reservation and payment are required. You will then receive an access code valid for the date specified in your booking. As reservation and access requirements may change, check these details before setting out.

Another hiking route is the Via dei Monti Lariani, Sentiero 4. Its red-and-white markings are painted on stones or displayed on aluminium markers attached to tree trunks and walls; they carry numbers from 1 to 4. Trails near Livo pass through the woods of Monte Sasso Pelo. From there, you can see the Insubric Line. The trail markings and the landscape destinations described here thus provide different points of reference for exploring the surrounding area.

Rural life and the surrounding area

Livo is surrounded by chestnut woods, and traditional pastoral activities continue to play an important role. These include raising sheep, goats and cattle. This continued agricultural activity adds another dimension to the historic character of the village centre and local life. When choosing accommodation in Livo, you can consider whether your trip will focus mainly on the frescoes and village layout, or on the trails and landscape destinations described here.
