Carate Urio brings together two themes for a stay: historic churches and the townscape, as well as trails into the mountains. Santa Marta represents sacred history with its Stations of the Cross; the Santuario di Pobiano can be reached on foot from Cavadino in about 15 minutes. Other mule tracks with different routes lead to the Monti. If you are looking for a hotel in Carate Urio, this combination offers a practical starting point for organizing your interests during your stay.

Churches and historic townscape

The Church of Santa Marta, originally dedicated to Saints Nazaro and Celso, is reached by a staircase. The staircase is lined by 14 chapels of the Stations of the Cross; they were built in 1752 and recently restored. The oldest part of the church probably dates from the 11th century. This means two different dates are given: 1752 refers to the chapels, while the dating of the oldest part of the church remains explicitly tentative.

The Via Regina passes Santa Marta in Carate Urio; the church is one of the artistically significant churches along this section of the route. The historic townscape of Carate is shaped by narrow lanes with steps, characteristic round arches and portals of old houses. This lets you complement the sacred architecture with another perspective: the intimate network of streets and houses that defines the town.

Another religious destination is the Santuario di Pobiano della Santissima TrinitĂ . From the hamlet of Cavadino, an approximately 15-minute walk leads there. A faithful replica of the Lourdes Grotto stands at the Santuario. Santa Marta and Pobiano thus offer different points of interest: Stations of the Cross chapels and church history at one, and the Santuario with its grotto at the other.

The Castello di Urio also has its own architectural feature. There, an 18th-century staircase connects the landing with the villa's parterre. The Castello's park includes a large monumental staircase and a distinctive walkway leading down to the lakeshore. These structures complement the churches with another perspective on staircases, paths and architectural connections.

Trails to the Monti

For hikes, consider the Monti di Carate and the Monti di Urio; both can be visited from Carate Urio. From the Monti, you can reach Sentiero N.1 of the Via dei Monti Lariani, which runs at an altitude of about 1,200 meters. The somewhat rugged Sentiero dell’alloro mule track also runs between the Monti di Urio and the Monti di Carate. Another steeply ascending mule track leads to the Monti di Carate in about an hour; there you will find a viewpoint and a spring.

The trails differ in their destinations and routes: the Sentiero dell’alloro connects the two Monti and is somewhat rugged; the other track climbs steeply and leads to a viewpoint. The approximately 15-minute walk from Cavadino to the Santuario and the roughly one-hour estimate for the Monti refer to different routes, not to two equivalent time options. Mountain conditions vary by season, and local trail conditions may vary. Take these differences and the time of year into account when planning.
