Pellio Intelvi brings together historic architecture and art with trails through woodland and countryside. When choosing how to spend your stay, you can focus on different things: Casa Corti, churches and the historic centre sit alongside the Percorso delle Trincee, woodland walks and mountain bike routes. Wide-ranging views of the Valle Intelvi and the surrounding Alps complete the picture of the town.

Historic Sites and Architecture

Casa Corti is a historic 17th-century villa in Pellio Inferiore. It has a large garden and hosts events and artistic activities. This named site brings together both a historic building and cultural activities.

Pellio’s historic centre preserves its original layout and conveys the town’s medieval character. Among Pellio’s most notable buildings is the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giorgio Martire. Together, the preserved townscape and the parish church offer an impression of Pellio’s architectural history.

In Pellio Inferiore, the Chiesa di San Michele has been associated since the 18th century with a group of eight wooden statuettes. The figures are attributed to Ercole Ferrata and his assistants. Alongside the church and its setting in the town, this specific group of works is also of historical interest.

The Fortilizio di Pellio Superiore, a defensive structure associated with the strategic control of the valley’s connecting routes, was located in Pellio Superiore. Only partial traces of the structure remain. The villa, churches and fortilizio represent different themes: architectural history, sacred art and the valley’s former defensive role.

Outdoor Art and the History of the Valley

The MUDA Museo Urbano d'Arte Magistri Intelvesi includes Pellio in Alta Valle Intelvi as one of the municipalities on its open-air art trail. Pellio is therefore part of an art project that involves several municipalities. For trip planning, this offers a different perspective from visiting individual historic buildings: the focus here is on Pellio’s place in a trail spanning several municipalities.

Hiking, Woodlands and Views

The Percorso delle Trincee is described as an easy hike, with 485 metres of elevation gain and a walking time of about four and a half hours. You can take both the duration and elevation gain into account when planning your day. The route passes through the Foresta del Monte Generoso and the municipality of Alta Valle Intelvi, going via Pellio Superiore to Lanzo and on to the Swiss border. It also leads to fortifications from the First World War. The trail therefore combines a longer hike with a specific connection to military history.

There are also walking trails through the woods in and around Pellio, as well as mountain bike routes. These activities complement the hike with other ways to explore on foot and by bike. Pellio and its surroundings offer wide-ranging views of the Valle Intelvi and the surrounding Alps. Together, the trails, cycling routes and views of the landscape provide different ways to explore the area, and not all of them offer the same kind of experience.

Getting Around and the Festa delle Corti

Free parking is available along the Strada Provinciale 13. From there, Pellio Inferiore, Pellio Superiore and the main attractions can be reached on foot. Check the parking situation again before your visit.

During the Festa delle Corti, the old courtyards in Pellio’s historic centre open to visitors. Each courtyard has a food stand serving traditional local dishes; the food on offer may vary from one edition to another. The first Monday in August was cited as the recurring date for the Festa in 2024. Specific dates and programmes may vary from year to year, so check the information for the relevant edition before your trip.
