Menaggio: Hotels between the Town Centre, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Menaggio
Menaggio offers various starting points for your trip: its historic town centre, architecture and art in the districts, and trails with historical or scenic significance. If you are looking for a hotel in Menaggio, you can first consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay most.
Lanes and local cuisine
In the historic town centre, cobbled lanes wind uphill between closely spaced houses. Local cuisine includes missoltini, lake fish from Lake Como, which you can enjoy fresh, fried or grilled.
Art and architectural history in the districts
In Loveno, Villa Mylius Vigoni became a house museum with paintings, statues and valuable furnishings. Also in Loveno is the parish church of Santi Lorenzo e Agnese. It was rebuilt between 1725 and 1728 and preserves frescoes by Luigi Tagliaferro. The villa represents a house with an artistic history; the parish church brings together a clearly defined period of rebuilding and preserved wall paintings.
Menaggio itself also has a notable connection to the town’s earlier history: the Chiesa di San Carlo was built on the ruins of the former castle and has a distinctive Spanish-style bell gable. In Nobiallo, a fishing village within Menaggio, the leaning 13th-century Romanesque bell tower stands out. The Santuario della Regina della Pace is located there in a scenic spot and can be reached via the old Ponte della Madonna.
The historic Antica Strada Regina also runs from Nobiallo. As an important transport route, it once connected the Po Valley with the transalpine region. Menaggio’s history thus extends beyond individual buildings to include a route that once linked these larger regions.
Trails with historical significance
The historical and artistic trail begins in Piazza Garibaldi and leads to the medieval old town in the upper district. Most of it is covered on foot. On Monte Crocetta, you can walk along the restored paths of the Linea Cadorna, which lead to bunkers, troop shelters and observation posts.
Another route runs from Menaggio to Porlezza, following the former railway line. It is mostly paved and passes the Lago di Piano nature reserve. It starts at the Menaggio ferry terminal.
Parco Val Sanagra and getting oriented
Above Menaggio lies the expansive Parco Val Sanagra, with its flora, fauna, old rural settlements and numerous trails. An easy, child-friendly walk in the park starts in Piamuro, 2 kilometres from the centre of Menaggio, on the edge of the Loveno district.
Another industrial monument is the Fornace Galli. The old brickworks includes a kiln and water-powered clay-processing equipment. This adds another perspective on the town’s history alongside its churches and villa: here, the focus is on former brickmaking and industrial equipment.
For brochures and holiday recommendations, Menaggio’s tourist information office is located in Piazza Garibaldi. Together with the starting point of the historical and artistic trail, it provides a practical landmark for planning your visit to the town.
