When planning a trip to Locate Varesino, you can focus on two different themes: its hilly, forested landscape and its local architectural and cultural heritage. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these highlights can help you plan your days around a theme: trails pass through a variety of habitats, while churches, a villa and a monument offer tangible points of interest for exploring the area's architecture and history.

Woodland Landscape and Trails

The hilly part of the municipal area is largely covered by coniferous forests and lies within Parco della Pineta di Appiano Gentile e Tradate. The Sentiero Natura passes through the park’s different habitats: woodland, meadows, cultivated land and wetlands. This means the landscape includes open and cultivated areas as well as woodland. The nature trail is a useful guide for anyone who wants to take the park’s different landscape types into account when planning.

The Sentiero LungoParco is almost 40 kilometres long. Shortly before the Locate Varesino cemetery, it turns onto Via Marconi. At the cemetery, the Anello di Carbonate-Locate also branches off from the LungoParco and leads to Carbonate-Locate FNM station. Via Locate Varesino-Carbonate station, the Anello connects to the Trenord Milano–Varese–Laveno Mombello line. In addition to passing through the town, this route therefore also has a described rail connection.

Sentiero 844 C enters the built-up area of Locate Varesino, where it crosses the Sentiero LungoParco. The Sentiero Natura follows route 844 C through the forests of Locate Varesino and then returns to Via dei Ronchi di Tradate. These trail connections differ from the LungoParco’s longer route: the focus here is on entering the built-up area, connecting the trails and continuing through the forests.

Churches and Architectural History

The Chiesa dei Santi Quirico e Giulitta has been documented since the 14th century and was consecrated as a parish church in 1525. Its present appearance took shape when an earlier church building was enlarged. The facade of the older church is fully preserved and visible on the west side. The building thus reveals several historical layers: its early documentation, its consecration as a parish church and its subsequent enlargement.

The Chiesetta di Sant’Agostino was built in the 17th century as a private chapel for the Castiglioni family. Its described features include a gabled facade, an artistically designed upper window and a small bell tower with a square ground plan. These architectural details give it a different character from the parish church. The Chiesa di San Luigi is housed in the buildings belonging to the oratory, immediately beside the parish church.

Villa, Monument and Cultural Life

Villa Catenacci De Wich is protected as a national monument because of its historical and artistic significance. Its park contains numerous botanical species, including specimens dating from the 19th century. The villa’s history of use is also part of the town’s character: the De Wich family used it during their holidays. The villa therefore brings together architectural and garden-related themes, as well as its history of use.

The Monumento ai Caduti di Locate Varesino stands in the cemetery. It is about 3.5 metres high and consists of two square concrete columns, a block of marble and an iron cross. Its approximate height and the materials used describe the monument in concrete terms, without reducing it to just another stop along the way.

The Corpo Musicale di Locate Varesino is also part of local cultural life. Through its Scuola Allievi, it provides music education for children and young people, including courses in early childhood music education and instrumental studies. The Biblioteca di Locate Varesino offers a free public reading service. Churches, historic buildings and cultural institutions such as these complement the nature-related attractions with a range of connections to local life.
