Ossuccio offers several distinct themes for a culture-focused stay: sacred architecture, pilgrimage history, archaeology and an example of modern architecture. The main highlights are the Sacro Monte della Beata Vergine di Ossuccio, historic churches, the Antiquarium and the houseboat La Velarca. This variety can help you decide before choosing a hotel whether your trip will focus primarily on religious buildings, historical collections or architecture from different centuries.

The Sacro Monte and its chapels

The Sacro Monte della Beata Vergine di Ossuccio has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2003. The complex comprises the sanctuary and fourteen chapels depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary. Together, the sanctuary and chapels form a religious ensemble. If you are interested in sacred art or pilgrimage traditions, this connection can guide your visit. The setting also shapes the site: the Sacro Monte stands above a gorge through which the Perlana stream flows.

Churches with different historical traces

The churches in Ossuccio reflect different historical periods. The Chiesa di San Giacomo a Spurano is Romanesque and probably dates from the 11th century; this dating is therefore an estimate with some uncertainty. Santa Maria Maddalena is a Romanesque oratory from the 11th to 12th century. In 1169, it was mentioned under the name “S. Maria Maddalena et hospitale.” The year refers to a historical mention of the name, not to the building’s construction.

At the Chiesa dei Santi Agata e Sisinnio, the focus is on preserved features: the church retains its original altar as well as remnants of frescoes. Some fresco remnants are visible, while others are hidden in the attic. Together, the three examples illustrate different historical aspects: architectural style, the history of a name and preserved furnishings.

The Antiquarium and the history of Isola Comacina

The Antiquarium is housed in the former Hospitalis de Stabio, a place dating back at least to the 12th century where poor people and pilgrims were received. This former function of the building provides a historical context for the museum. The archaeological collection traces the development of Isola Comacina over thousands of years. The Antiquarium thus brings together the history of a place that once received visitors and a collection documenting the island’s development—two different ways of exploring the past.

The municipality lists seasonal opening hours for the Antiquarium from April to October, Thursday to Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the hours again before your trip.

La Velarca and the Greenway

La Velarca offers a different architectural perspective: the houseboat in Ossuccio was designed by Studio BBPR in 1959. The range of buildings therefore extends from churches shaped by the Middle Ages to a design from the 20th century. La Velarca can be reached from the lake by water taxi or on foot via the Greenway. Check transport options before your trip.

Along the Greenway del Lago di Como, there are public car parks, bus stops and ferry stops on Lake Como. For planning purposes, it is helpful to distinguish these options along the route from the specific access options to La Velarca.
