Planning a trip between history and landscape

When planning a trip to Lurago Marinone, you can focus on architectural history, historic cultural landscapes or seasonal events. Your choice affects which details you include in your plans: for buildings, the focus is on architectural features, patrons and dates; the Sentiero delle Uccellande is about woodland and agricultural landscapes and the former use of the Uccellande. Events, by contrast, provide seasonal occasions. If you are looking for a hotel, you can use these interests as a starting point for choosing your travel dates.

Uccellande and trails in the park

The Sentiero delle Uccellande runs through wooded and agricultural areas in Lurago Marinone, Veniano and Limido Comasco. The Uccellande lie along the trail: significant rectangular groups of trees and historic structures that were used in past centuries to catch migratory birds. The birds were caught for food, trade and recreation. In this way, the trail links the landscape to a specific chapter in its history of use: the Uccellande represent not only a particular landform, but also the former purposes for which migratory birds were caught.

The trail begins at the ancient Borgo di San Giorgio in the municipality of Lurago Marinone. A route with two branches explores landscapes in the southern part of the park and leads to the railway stations of Abbiate Guazzone (Tradate), Mozzate and Locate Varesino. Check the trail details before your visit; if you plan to include the stations mentioned, also check the train connections.

Buildings from different centuries

Parts of the Antico Oratorio di San Giorgio date back to the 7th century. These include the south wall with two small windows. This reference to the architectural features ties the date to a specific part of the oratory. Another historical feature is the surviving large portal of the Antico Castello di Lurago: its round arch is attributed to the early 15th century.

A Latin inscription on Palazzo Litta Biumi Resta documents a restoration in 1715; the palazzo was restored by Giulio Resta. The Oratorio della Beata Vergine was built by Monsignore Giulio Resta in the first decades of the 18th century, certainly before the pastoral visit of 1734. Both details name Giulio Resta, but refer to different buildings and undertakings: the restoration of the palazzo and the construction of the oratory.

The new parish church can also be dated: it was completed only at the end of the 17th century. The church contains a painting of Saint Anthony of Padua with the Christ Child, created by Carlo Innocenzo Carloni between 1744 and 1747. These details refer to the new parish church; it is not identified here with the Antico Oratorio di San Giorgio.

Festivals, cuisine and local traditions

Tacabanda brings music, beer and food together over three days. Savour de Ca nostra is a September tradition that revives the area's flavours and traditions; dates vary from one edition to another. Every year on 1 November, roasted chestnuts, typical dishes such as trippa and cazzuola, and seasonal desserts are offered. If you want to time your trip to coincide with one of these festivals, check that year's programme.

The Pro Loco's Christmas programme includes an exhibition of handmade nativity scenes at the Chiesetta di San Giorgio. Here, too, it is advisable to check the specific edition when planning your travel dates. The programme for Festa al Borgo 2026 included a demonstration of traditional crafts, with typical tastings from Val Cavargna. It also included an exceptional opening of a museum dedicated to rural life in the past. This museum opening was part of the special event programme; it is not information about regular opening hours.
