Plzeň-Jih: Baroque, Monasteries and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Plzeň-Jih
At Nebílovy Château, a distinctive side of Plzeň-Jih comes into view: a High Baroque palace modeled on Viennese architecture, built in the early 18th century. The region’s routes also tell stories of the past—from the founding of the monastery in Chotěšov to nature trails that connect the natural world with local history. For your trip, you can therefore choose to focus on architecture, historic sites, or longer or shorter walks.
Baroque Architecture and Monastic History
Nebílovy Château consists of two horseshoe-shaped buildings facing each other across the courtyard. This layout makes the floor plan just as distinctive a feature as the Baroque design. Inside are murals by Antonín Tuvora. The château is considered a cultural and social center of southern Plzeňsko—a description of its significance beyond the building itself.
Přeštice also has an architectural landmark: the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the largest Baroque church in the Czech Republic outside Prague and has been a national cultural monument since 2008. Chotěšov’s monastic history goes back further. Blessed Hroznata founded the monastery between 1202 and 1210; it was remodeled in the Baroque style from 1734 to 1756. Plzeň-Jih thus brings medieval beginnings and later Baroque changes together.
The Chotěšov convent now houses a museum about the history of the complex. The convent is open to the public seasonally. Check when visits are possible before you travel. Another museum can be found on the ground floor of Spálené Poříčí Château: the National Museum of Folklore of the Spálené Poříčí region.
Nature Trails with Different Themes
The Pod Zelenou horou trail is suitable for hikers, cyclists, families with children, and visitors with strollers. There are nine information boards along the nearly 4.5-kilometer route. The trail runs from Nepomuk around Zelená Hora Château and on to Klášter. One of the stops is at a site that developed on the ruins of a 12th-century Cistercian monastery. The route combines exercise with several stops exploring regional history.
The Nebílovy nature trail is a different length and covers its own mix of topics: the circular route is 5.7 kilometers long and has six information boards. It explores the history, flora and fauna of Nebílovy and its surroundings. The route also includes the Chapel of St. Barbara, built above a spring in 1859. Comparing the two trails, their length and number of stops offer a practical guide; the topics range from the history and nature of Nebílovy to the sites around Zelená Hora and Klášter.
Landscape and Regional Themes
Mariina skála is in the Kornatický potok Nature Park. Near Spálené Poříčí, the Za mlynáři od Bradavy themed trail explores the history of milling in the Bradava valley. Together with the folklore museum in the château, these offer a focus on the landscape and regional life, while covering distinct subjects: the trail explores the valley’s milling history, while the museum focuses on the region’s folklore.
Nebílovy’s local character also includes a long tradition of growing pome and stone fruits, including apples and plums. So, as well as châteaux, churches and monasteries, agricultural traditions are also part of the region’s character. Visitors primarily interested in architecture will find buildings from different periods and in different styles; those who prefer spending time outdoors can compare the nature trails by length and content.
Planning Your Trip
Cycle Route 2126 connects Černice in Plzeň with Nebílovy. There is also a large parking lot on the outskirts of Nebílovy, on the road from Plzeň. As visitor facilities can change, check this information before setting out. When choosing your hotel, it may help to first decide which places and experiences you want to shape your stay, then compare locations based on your travel plans.
