Nepomuk: Discover churches, art and trails
Accommodation in Nepomuk
When looking for a hotel in Nepomuk, the themes of your stay can make all the difference: sacred history, art, historic technology or trails. The attractions range from two churches with different histories of construction to a nature trail with nine stops.
Churches and the history of Saint John
The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk is a Baroque church designed by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. It stands on the site where, according to tradition, the saint’s birthplace was located. The Svatojánské Museum displays a collection of works of art and devotional objects from the 18th to the 20th century, documenting the diversity and richness of the cult of Saint John.
During visiting hours, the nave of the Church of Saint John is freely accessible; to see the entire church, you must arrange an appointment in advance with the parish priest or the sacristan. The Church of Saint James the Greater is a fortified Gothic basilica with Romanesque remains and a Baroque bell tower. It is open during services and cultural events, or by arrangement through the Svatojánské Museum.
Museums and exhibitions
The birthplace of the painter Augustin Němejc is a house dating from the early 19th century. The artist was born here, and today a permanent public exhibition of his work is on display. The focus is therefore on the work of a single painter, while the Svatojánské Museum displays works of art and devotional objects spanning several centuries.
A permanent exhibition of historic technology is housed in the former stables of the old Zelenohorská Post. The old post is the second stop on the Pod Zelenou horou nature trail.
Nature trails and routes
The Pod Zelenou horou nature trail starts in the upper part of Nepomuk’s square. It is just under 4.5 kilometres long and has nine stops with information panels. The route is suitable for walkers, cyclists and families with children, and is accessible with a pushchair.
The Stations of the Cross on Lipový vrch is about 800 metres long and was created in 2021. It leads from the local cemetery to the former execution site on Lipový vrch, also known locally as Lipák or Šibenice. At just under 4.5 kilometres, the nature trail is considerably longer than this Stations of the Cross route; the two routes also have different thematic focuses.
The “Nepomuckou vrchovinou za starými kostely” route is another regional cycling route. A large part of it runs through the Kákov-Plánický hřeben Nature Park.
Music and wellness
Atrium Piarum is a concert hall with a grand piano in the heart of Nepomuk. Pivovar a Beer Spa Zlatá Kráva offers private beer baths in the old brewery cellars as well as a wellness area. Alongside churches, exhibitions and trails, you can also find attractions related to music and wellness.
