The Plzeňský kraj combines nature experiences with distinctive cultural and brewing traditions. At the visitor centres in Srní and Kvilda, wildlife observation and specific walking trails take centre stage; other travel ideas range from Šumava forests and historic long-distance trails to museums, Chodsko folklore and spas. For a trip to Pilsen, you can choose from a variety of interests: days outdoors, cultural history or regional specialities.

Wildlife observation and walking trails

At the Návštěvnické centrum Srní, a 300-metre-long wooden boardwalk leads through the wolf enclosure. It is three to four metres above the ground and has observation huts. There is also an approximately two-kilometre-long educational trail about the predators of the Šumava, local trees and plants. The two experiences offer different perspectives: the boardwalk provides an elevated view, while the trail brings together several nature-related themes.

An accompanied route to the elevated bridge is available from the designated car park for people with reduced mobility. Confirm the current arrangements before travelling. There is also a children's playground at the building; check whether it is currently available. You should also check the current access conditions for the boardwalk and educational trail before visiting.

The Návštěvnické centrum Kvilda offers a different walk: the 2.6-kilometre Jelení stezka, which runs partly through a deer enclosure and has three observation towers. The route is rated as suitable for families with small children; current trail conditions may be a factor. Compared with Srní, the focus here is on the route through part of the enclosure and the towers. Check the current conditions for the trail before visiting.

Šumava, long-distance trails and landscapes

Šumava National Park also extends into the Plzeňský kraj. The Gunthersteig runs through the forests of the Bohemian Forest and picturesque villages. The historic Golden Trail leads to Kašperské Hory and Kašperk Castle. The region's long-distance trails also include the Vintíř Trail and the Golden Trail; viewpoints, castle ruins and protected natural areas add to the range of routes. There are dozens of tourist routes in total, including outside the Šumava.

Those who prefer cycling can link routes with observation towers, castles, natural attractions and places to eat. Hromnické jezírko offers a distinctive landscape: the natural monument has an unusual reddish colour and was formed as a remnant of a slate quarry. Check access to the site locally.

Culture and history

The cultural offering includes galleries, museums, theatres and music festivals, as well as Choden folklore. The Škoda Family Museum focuses on Emil Škoda, his extended family and more than 150 years of Škoda factory history. It also features a working model of an electric railway. Personal and regional industrial history thus meet an engaging technical exhibit.

The Klatovské katakomby lie beneath the Jesuit church. They tell the story of the town and the Jesuit order; around 30 mummified bodies are on display. Opening hours may change, so check them before visiting. In Plasy, the Centrum stavitelského dědictví explores the history of construction techniques and materials. It is housed in former brewery and farm buildings of Plasy Monastery; individual exhibitions may change.

Brewing traditions and spas

Beer trails connect 14 well-known breweries in the region and offer an insight into centuries-old brewing traditions. Ale has been brewed in Chodová Planá since the 12th century. In Klatovy, Modrý Abbé Beer Studio offers dark Granát lager as well as the non-alcoholic, unfiltered Svatý Kryštof. These examples illustrate different sides of the local beer culture: a long brewing history as well as specific regional specialities.

Wellness is another possible travel interest: Konstantinovy Lázně offers therapeutic baths and massages. Beer baths are available at Purkmistr, Chodovar and Šumava Herbal Spa. Together with nature trails, museums and cultural events, these offer a variety of reasons to discover Pilsen and the Plzeňský kraj.
