Forest landscapes and active days

Domažlice District invites you to explore nature, Chod Culture and history as different reasons to travel. In the Český les, extensive forests give way to pastures, meadows and partly overgrown open areas. From the Dům přírody Českého lesa, a 9 km, moderately challenging hiking route leads to the Chodovské skály. Its length and difficulty give you concrete points of reference for fitting the hike into your day’s plans.

Guided excursions are offered in the municipal forests of Domažlice for organized groups and individuals. There are two route options for the excursions, with themes covering forests, wildlife and history. In winter, cross-country ski tracks are groomed around Čerchov; check the grooming status before setting out. The CT3 cycle route is signposted along the Domažlice–Luženičky–Blížejov–Osvračín–Staňkov section. The activities differ mainly in how they are planned: the municipal forest excursions focus on guided tours and themes, while seasonal grooming is key for cross-country skiing.

Chod Culture and history

Chodský hrad is now home to the Muzeum Chodska. Its exhibition is rich and varied. The Muzeum J. Jindřicha displays numerous folk culture objects collected in Chodsko and has an extensive collection of reverse glass paintings. The Chodské slavnosti combine Chodsko folklore with the pilgrimage to Vavřinec and have been held since 1955.

Domažlice’s fortification history can also be placed in a historical context: the remains of the town walls date from the town’s founding in the second half of the 13th century. Dolní brána dates to around 1270; Bezděkovská branka was probably built at the end of the 15th century.

Visiting and regional specialties

In Horšovský Týn, the square right next to the castle serves as a visitor car park. There is a bicycle rack at the entrance gate to the castle grounds; bicycles are not allowed inside the grounds. Before your visit, check the parking rules, bicycle parking options and applicable visitor regulations.

Domažlická, Čerchov, Čakan and Domažlický doppel are beer names associated with Městský pivovar Domažlice. As the range may change, check what is currently available in advance.

When looking for a hotel, you can start by considering which themes you want to shape your stay: hiking and landscapes, Chod Culture, historic places or seasonal activities.
