Hvožďany: Nature, Geology and Local History
Accommodation in Hvožďany
Hvožďany lies on a hilltop, 2.5 kilometres west of Poběžovice. If you are looking for a hotel in Hvožďany, the village offers several distinct points of interest: a protected hillside meadow, a geological quartz-vein outcrop, a circular village green and historic traces of mills and papermaking. A hiking trail and several cycle routes pass through the municipality. When choosing a hotel for your stay, you can focus on nature, local history or outdoor activities.
Meadows and Geology
Hvožďanská louka is a protected natural monument covering just under seven hectares on the southeastern slope of Nademlýnský vrch hill. It lies on the boundary between the cadastral areas of Načetín and Hvožďany. The meadow protects diverse natural vegetation, including specially protected plant species; please do not pick any plants. The protected area also includes pastures south of Načetín, with a rich variety of moisture-loving flowering plants. Check local access rules before visiting.
The Český val u Poběžovic geological site offers a different point of interest. It is one of the few large, well-preserved quartz-vein outcrops that make up the Český křemenný val, and lies in the cadastral area of Hvožďany u Poběžovic. From Poběžovice, the rocky outcrop is about 1.5 kilometres west along the road to Mnichov, 250 metres past the turnoff to Hvožďany. It is accessible by car without restriction; the access road comes within 250 metres of the site. Check local access conditions before visiting.
Village Layout and History
Hvožďany was first mentioned in 1528 as part of the abandoned Starý Herštejn castle; the village later passed to the Poběžovice estate. Poběžovice is both a geographical reference point for Hvožďany’s location and the name of the later estate. The surviving layout includes a circular village green with a pond. A turnoff from the road between Poběžovice and Mnichov crosses the spacious green. The square therefore connects the surviving settlement layout with a specific road route. Historically, Hvožďany was home to mills and a paper mill on the Pivoňka stream. Several mills once operated south of the settlement, near Mlýnský potok. Thus, the village’s history encompasses not only the castle and settlement layout, but also former milling and papermaking.
Hiking and Cycle Routes
A hiking trail and several cycle routes pass through Hvožďany. Cycle route 2281 also runs through the village; its route description was last updated in 2017. Zlatá stezka 14 is a named long-distance hiking route: its first section, from Poběžovice to Bělá nad Radbuzou, passes through Hvožďany and Mnichov on the way to Pivoň. Unlike the general reference to hiking and cycle routes, Zlatá stezka is a specific route with named places along the section. Before setting out, check the current trail markings and route conditions.
