Discover Puclice
Accommodation in Puclice
Puclice offers several distinct points of interest to consider when planning a stay: the history of the fortress, the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, the Jewish cemetery and the wooden lookout tower. When looking for a hotel in Puclice, this overview can help you first decide what interests you most—local history, architecture or landscape. The sights are also located in different places: the chapel stands on the village square west of the pond, and the tower is on Křižovatka Hill south of the village.
The Fortress and Local History
Puclice Fortress is currently open to the public by prior arrangement. If you plan to visit, make this arrangement part of your preparations. Historically, the fortress ceased to function as a feudal manor after 1765. The earliest surviving records of Puclice as a whole date from the second half of the 14th century. These dates refer to different things: the records concern the village, while 1765 marks the fortress’s later change of function. This distinction helps set the history of the building apart from the earliest records of Puclice.
The Chapel and Jewish Cemetery
The Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene stands on the village square west of the pond. It is a freestanding, masonry building with plastered walls and, as a centrally planned chapel, has a regular hexagonal floor plan. The Jewish cemetery in Puclice was allegedly established in 1750. It is also the endpoint of Route 1/1400, which passes through Puclice. These offer different historical points of interest: the chapel’s design and location, and the cemetery as a route endpoint. The cemetery’s date is still qualified as an allegation.
The Lookout Tower and Landscape
The wooden lookout tower stands on Křižovatka Hill south of the village and is permanently open to the public free of charge. From there, parts of the Švihovská vrchovina, the Všerubská vrchovina and the Český les are visible. The viewpoint therefore offers a different focus from the fortress and chapel: here, the landscape takes centre stage. Only parts of these named regions can be seen. The tower thus combines a specific location south of Puclice with views of three different landscape areas.
Getting There and Planning
Puclice can be reached from the main road from Plzeň via Staňkov, Křenov or Semošice. These specific access points can help you find your way. When planning your stay, it is also worth distinguishing between the different visiting arrangements for the fortress and the lookout tower: the fortress requires a prior arrangement, while the tower is permanently open to the public free of charge. This makes clear which of the two requires an arrangement.
