The features below offer specific points of reference to help you understand the destination’s character and guide your search. Once you have chosen an offer, check the details that matter for your travel dates and stay.

Landscape and Village Character

Úsilov lies in a wide basin surrounded by the wooded ridges of the Chudenická vrchovina and the Švihovská vrchovina. The Dubovka stream flows through the village. Two ponds were created along it; the larger one is called Mlýnský rybník. The village also has its original rural buildings, whose character Úsilov has preserved. The landscape and settlement pattern describe different aspects of the destination: the basin, ridges, and stream provide the natural setting, while the preserved buildings draw attention to the village itself. The stream and ponds add water features to the village landscape, while the rural layout offers another point of reference when choosing a destination.

Fortress and History

The earliest written mention of Úsilov dates from 1379. In the late 14th century, Úsilov belonged to Švihov Castle. The original Úsilov fortress was probably built in the second half of the 14th century. Drawings from the late 17th century show it under the names “Ausylow” and “Twrz Ausylow.” The dates mark different milestones: 1379 is the earliest written mention of the village, the second half of the 14th century is the fortress’s probable construction period, and the late 17th century is when drawings depict the structure under its historical names.

The oldest part of the fortress is a tower-like building. Its original form changed when it was converted into a granary. A square tower and a short Renaissance wing were added later. The Renaissance wing is a later addition; together with the older, altered structure, it makes the different phases of the architecture clear. The fortress was once surrounded by a moat, no remains of which survive. The last major alterations to the fortress took place in 1930. Its building history can therefore be understood as a sequence of an original core, later additions, and alterations, rather than reduced to a single construction phase.

Walking and Cycling

A hiking trail marked in green passes through Úsilov; the route through the village runs from east to west. The marking and direction offer different navigational cues: one identifies the trail marking, the other its course through the village. For cycling, the route details help distinguish two routes by location. Cycle Route 2192 runs through the northeastern part of the municipal area and through the village. Cycle Route 2193 passes through wooded areas in the western part of the municipal area. The described sections therefore differ in their location and surroundings. If you are planning a specific outing, check the current route and conditions before setting out.
