Milavče brings together church art, historic buildings, and archaeological traces. The village’s history stretches from the Late Bronze Age to memorials from the 20th century. A nature trail, a connection to an international cycle route, and a railway stop are also among the things that may play a role in planning a trip. This makes it possible to get to know the village from different perspectives without confusing its building history, its artists, and its routes with one another.

Church and chapel in Milavče

Kostel sv. Vojtěcha was built between 1741 and 1748 on the site of an older chapel. The nave features scenes from the life of St. Vojtěch, created by the Pilsen painter F. J. Lux sometime after the middle of the 18th century. Both the date of construction and the later artistic decoration are therefore central to the village’s history.

Vojtěška has a different form: the small chapel is polygonal and stands on the village green beside the pond. Its location and shape clearly distinguish it from the church. Vojtěška is also linked to a historical tradition: during severe droughts, processions went to the chapel, including people from more distant places. These processions are part of the village’s recorded history; they do not indicate an event that takes place regularly today.

Building history and memorial sites

The late Baroque building of Obecná škola Milavče was built in 1775 and is under strict heritage protection. Its construction date and protected status provide a specific time marker for understanding the past. Together with the church, it shows that Milavče’s architectural history is not limited to a single building.

The birthplace of actor Jiří Bittner is also associated with a dated memorial. A commemorative plaque was unveiled there on September 27, 1925. On June 10, 1946, a bust of the actor was added beneath the plaque. The two dates mark different stages of commemoration: first the plaque, then the bust installed below it. These memorials add a biographical dimension to the buildings in the village’s history.

Artists and archaeological traces

Milavče is also the birthplace of artist Josef Váchal. He created several oil paintings and works using mixed techniques featuring motifs from his hometown. The connection between the artist and the village is thus reflected in motifs drawn from Milavče itself. This offers a different perspective on the village’s history from the construction dates of the church and school: here, the focus is on artistic interpretations of the artist’s hometown.

Archaeological traces reach further back in time. The Milavče area was already inhabited in the Late Bronze Age. Finds from this period led to the term “milavečská kultura” (“Milavče culture”). Numerous burial mounds were also discovered around Milavče in the 19th century. These details relate to different historical periods: Bronze Age settlement and the later discovery of the burial mounds. If you are interested in archaeological history, the Naučná stezka Milavečské mohyly nature trail offers a dedicated route on this theme.

Nature trail, cycle route, and getting there

The Naučná stezka Milavečské mohyly nature trail runs through the countryside of Chodsko and past the oldest monuments of human life in the region. Its description therefore brings together nature and historical sites. Milavče is also connected to an international cycle route, which leads to Horšovský Týn and continues in the direction of Plzeň. The nature trail and cycle route offer different ways to plan your stay; no route distances or travel times are provided for this purpose. Check current route information before setting out, as route details may change.

Milavče also has a railway stop. For specific rail travel plans, check the timetable. This lets you confirm in advance whether the train connections suit your travel dates and plan your journey separately from deciding whether to go for a walk or a cycling trip.
