Stankov: Culture and walks along the Radbuza
Accommodation in Stankov
Stankov combines its location on the Radbuza with distinctive cultural sites and opportunities for walks. When planning your stay, you can focus on architectural and art history or include the landscape around the town. The destinations differ considerably: the church is notable for its architecture and paintings, while the chapel on Mastník offers views and a chance to relax outdoors.
The Radbuza as a point of reference
Stankov lies on the Radbuza between Plzeň and Domažlice. The river divides the town into Staňkov město on the left bank and Staňkov ves on the right bank. These two names help you understand the town’s layout in relation to the river. The Radbuza is therefore a clear geographical reference point for Stankov; the two parts of the town lie on opposite sides of the river.
Gothic church and historic paintings
The Church of St. James the Greater is originally Gothic and dates from the early 15th century. This single-nave building is enclosed by a cemetery wall with a gate. Inside, Baroque ceiling paintings and fragments of Gothic wall paintings have been preserved. Different art-historical layers thus come together in one building: the original Gothic structure and the surviving paintings point to different periods. The church offers a clear focus for your stay if you are interested in sacred architecture or historic art.
Chapel on Mastník and walks
The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes stands on Mastník. It was built by the mason Václav Vacík in 1898. The chapel offers views of the surrounding area and is also visited by people going for walks or seeking relaxation. This destination combines a historic building with time outdoors, while the church is chiefly distinguished by its architecture and interior paintings. If you are planning to visit the chapel as part of a walk, check the current access arrangements before setting out.
Culture at Lidový dům
Lidový dům was completed in 1931 and extensively renovated between 1984 and 1988. Today, it is used for balls, social events, dance classes, and amateur theatre performances. Since the programme may change, it is a good idea to check the current dates before your trip. The Staňkov puppet theatre is located on Dělnická Street in the Lidový dům and cinema complex. The puppet theatre was revived in 1995 and has a long-standing tradition. The year therefore marks its revival, not the beginning of the tradition. In the past, an amateur theatre group staged two plays a year, each with four to five performances; this describes a historical performance pattern, not a current schedule.
Forest trails and annual events
The forests around Stankov invite you to walk along forest trails. This offers a complement to visiting individual cultural sites: you can focus on a particular building or follow a trail through the surrounding countryside. Seasonal forestry restrictions may apply on the forest trails, so check the conditions if you are planning a walk. The traditional Jakubská pouť also provides a date to plan around: it takes place on the Sunday after the feast of St. James. Confirm the programme for the relevant year before your trip. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests—with cultural history, walks, or both.
