Choden history and sacred architecture give Mrákov a cultural and historical focus, while Lomeček adds a place for swimming and ice skating that is shaped by the seasons. Mrákov was one of the eleven oldest Choden villages in the southwestern border region of Bohemia. In the past, the Chodové of Mrákov stood guard to protect the country’s border and the trade routes to Domažlice. These historical connections sit alongside specific buildings and the cultural work of the Chodský soubor Mrákov ensemble.

The Church of St. Lawrence and its protected complex

On Mrákov’s village square, the church dedicated to St. Lawrence was built between 1811 and 1813 on the site of an earlier chapel. It has three naves and a prism-shaped tower on the façade. The term “three-naved” describes the division of the church interior into three naves and thus gives an indication of the building’s layout.

In addition to the church, the protected complex includes a mortuary, the boundary wall with two gates and a wicket gate, a cast-iron cross, and the associated plots of land. The protected status therefore covers several elements and does not apply solely to the church building. For those interested in cultural history, this designation also makes the church relevant as part of a larger heritage complex.

Choden tradition and festival

The Chodský soubor Mrákov ensemble was founded in 1961 by a group of folk culture enthusiasts. The ensemble maintains and develops the folklore heritage of the Choden region through singing and dancing to Choden songs, and preserves the traditional costumes of the Lower Choden region. Its cultural work therefore encompasses music and dance as well as passing on the regional costume tradition.

An annual highlight is the Chodská hyjta festival. It takes place in Mrákov on the first Saturday after August 10 and features performers from the Choden region and abroad. Since the exact calendar date changes from year to year, check the date for your travel year in advance. This lets you fit the festival into your travel plans without assuming it falls on a fixed date.

Timber construction and local memory

In Starý Klíčov, which belongs to Mrákov, Farmhouse No. 80 preserves a residential building constructed using timber framing. In this building style, the structure is formed by layers of wood stacked on top of one another. The house was built no later than the first half of the 19th century, and records confirm that it already existed in 1838. It is considered one of the best-preserved examples of the development of timber houses in the Choden region.

The memorial house stands on Mrákov’s village square and is associated with visits by Božena Němcová, Karel Havlíček, František Palacký, and F. L. Rieger. This wording presents the visits as an attribution. If you are planning to visit the memorial house, check in advance whether visits are possible.

Lomeček in different seasons

Lomeček, near Mrákov, is a former quarry that serves as a natural outdoor swimming pool in summer and an ice-skating area in winter. Conditions and operations can change with the seasons; if you plan to use either facility, check the current situation before your visit.

Another distinctive feature is the underwater observation cabin at a depth of eight metres. Several circular windows, each half a metre in diameter, offer views of underwater life. Alongside its seasonal uses, underwater observation is another feature of Lomeček.
