Klenčí Pod Čerchovem: Cultural History and Nature
Accommodation in Klenčí Pod Čerchovem
Klenčí Pod Čerchovem offers two specific themes for planning a trip: local history and the landscape of the Český les. Cultural history includes the Stará pošta, St. Martin’s Church, the Lomikarova boží muka wayside shrines and the Baar Museum. The Dům přírody Českého lesa complements these with themes related to nature and the landscape. If you are looking for a hotel, these highlights can help you narrow down the purpose of your trip.
Stará pošta and the historic townscape
The Stará pošta is a historic post office building dating from the 18th century; the complex has been protected as an immovable cultural monument since 1958. Its history is linked to a trade route that ran from Prague through Plzeň and Klenčí, then on to Waldmünchen, Řezno and Regensburg. This connection adds a historical perspective extending beyond the town itself to the building’s history.
Since 1995, the center of Klenčí has been designated a village conservation area of folk architecture. Original houses have been preserved on both sides of the streets between the Stará pošta and the church. St. Martin’s Church is a Baroque church built between 1737 and 1745. This means the historical perspective extends from the designated center to individual buildings and the development in between.
The protected Baroque Lomikarova boží muka wayside shrines date from the second half of the 17th century and are considered the oldest sacred monument in Klenčí Pod Čerchovem. Compared with St. Martin’s Church, which was built in the 18th century, they take us back to an earlier phase of the town’s religious architectural history.
Chod culture and folklore
Baarův památník is also commonly known as the Baar Museum and was established in accordance with the last will of Jindřich Šimon Baar. Its collection documents the lives of the old Chods, their folk art and Baar’s literary legacy. Here, the focus is on people, art and literature, while the historic buildings reveal other aspects of the town’s history.
The annual Výhledy folklore festival takes place on the grounds of the Stará pošta. If you choose the festival as the reason for your trip, check the dates in advance.
Nature in the Český les
The Dům přírody Českého lesa is a visitor center for the Český les Protected Landscape Area. A tour explores the themes of an ancient beech forest, the area’s first settlement in the 12th century, and rural settlements from the period when glassmaking was developing. In this way, the natural environment and the history of settlement are brought together.
The outdoor area includes newly reconstructed water features and interactive learning stations about the water cycle in nature. The nature education facilities there may be expanded over time. The water stations thus complement the tour with a distinct perspective on natural cycles.
Cycling and trip planning
The marked Magistrála Český Les long-distance cycling route passes through Klenčí Pod Čerchovem. Its status may change, so check it before your trip. Together with the annual folklore festival, the cycling route offers another reason to plan a trip: for Výhledy, the specific event dates matter; for the Magistrála, it’s the current route status.
