Spáňov: Village Chapel and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Spáňov
Spáňov brings together a late Baroque village chapel and historic buildings nearby. If you are looking for a hotel, this combination offers a specific theme to start with: the chapel stands in the village square, while the Rýzmberk Castle ruins and the Klobouk u Kouta Gloriet are nearby. The result is a meeting of architectural history in the village and historic destinations in the surrounding area. Depending on your interests, you can make architecture and sacred art, or castle history and landscape, the focus of your stay.
Location and landscape
Spáňov lies 440 metres above sea level on the boundary between the Všerubská vrchovina and the Podčeskoleská pahorkatina. Domažlický háj, a slightly elevated woodland, is located on the western side of the village. The elevation and the transition between the two landscape areas provide the geographical setting; the woodland adds a specific natural feature on the western edge of the village.
The late Baroque chapel in the village
A late Baroque chapel dating from the second half of the 18th century stands in the village square. It is hexagonal and has a bell tower. Inside is a folk-style painting of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. The building thus combines a distinctive shape with a specific religious subject. Its date and architectural details give the chapel a distinct profile within the history of the village; the painting complements its exterior form with sacred imagery.
Rýzmberk: castle and trade route
The Rýzmberk Castle ruins, with an observation tower, lie near Spáňov. The castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century on a high hill near Kdyně. Its historical role was strategic: Rýzmberk controlled the Všerubský Pass, through which an important trade route to Bavaria ran. The ruins are therefore associated not only with an observation tower, but also with a pass and a trade connection. This background offers a different emphasis from the chapel in the village: here, the focus is on medieval castle history and the trade route linking the area with Bavaria.
The Klobouk u Kouta Gloriet
The Klobouk u Kouta Gloriet stands on a hill between the villages of Kout na Šumavě and Spáňov. The Kout estate had it built in 1723. It dates from considerably later than Rýzmberk’s foundation in the 13th century. The Gloriet was presumably intended as a small structure to enliven the park-like landscape and give the estate a place to rest with a beautiful view of Kout Castle and its picturesque surroundings. Unlike Rýzmberk’s strategic role, the Gloriet’s presumed purpose draws attention to landscape design and a place intended for rest.
Views and cycling route
The Koráb observation tower offers views of Domažlicko, the Český les, the Šumava and Bavaria. For a different perspective on the area, there is also the Kout–Spáňov cycling route: this section has been completed and forms part of the planned Domažlice–Kdyně cycling route. The observation tower and cycling route offer different points of interest: named areas visible from the tower on the one hand, and a connection with clearly distinguished completion and planning statuses on the other.
