Nezdřev – Wayside Shrine, Chapel and Pond Landscape
Accommodation in Nezdřev
Nezdřev can be explored through several themes: historic buildings in the village, a pond landscape within the municipality, and named hiking and cycling routes. The Boží muka wayside shrine and the Chapel of St. Joseph represent different aspects of the village’s history. Ponds and paths offer another focus for planning your trip. You can decide whether you are mainly interested in architectural history and remembrance, or whether you would also like to include the landscape and outdoor activities.
Wayside Shrine, Chapel and Local History
The Boží muka wayside shrine was built in 1692. It is the oldest surviving dated monument in Nezdřev and was dedicated in honor and glory of Saint Andrew. Its construction date and dedication give the shrine a clear historical context: they link a precise date with a religious association.
The Chapel of St. Joseph was built in 1892 on Nezdřev’s larger village green. Its facade bears a memorial plaque with the names of men born in Nezdřev who died in the First World War from 1914 to 1918. While the wayside shrine is notable for its construction date and dedication, the chapel is also associated with the commemoration of these men.
An archaeological find offers a broader perspective on the area’s history. In 1950, a grave containing three vessels was discovered at Na Pláňovech. These included a vessel with a cremation burial, as well as iron and bronze objects. The find links vessels and metal objects with evidence of a burial, offering a different way of exploring the past from the two buildings in the village.
Pond Landscape and Location
A medieval pond system lies within Nezdřev’s territory as a higher-lying part of the Blatná pond system. Its ponds are mostly located along tributaries of the Lomnice. They form valuable aquatic and wetland biotopes that are particularly important for plants, mollusks and birds. The pond landscape is therefore defined both by its historical context and by its importance as a habitat.
One specific body of water in Nezdřev’s territory is Strašil, a flow-through pond on the Hradišťský potok. It lies in the cadastral area of Nezdřev at an elevation of 503 meters and covers 21.12 hectares. It is four meters deep, and 13 meters at the dam; this makes Strašil the deepest pond in the Blatná area. It is also one kilometer northeast of Bezděkov. The different depth figures describe the pond as a whole and the area by the dam.
The village’s location is also part of its landscape: Nezdřev lies on a gently uneven slope facing east. Together with the pond system, this description helps orient travelers interested in the landscape around the village.
Hiking Route and Cycling Tour
The yellow-marked TT 6716 hiking route passes through Nezdřev. Its itinerary runs from Pačejov railway station through Kvášňovice, Defurovy Lažany and Nová Ves to Nezdřev, then continues via Bezděkov and Pole to Velký Pálenec. Nezdřev is therefore one stop along a route linking several named places and Pačejov railway station. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The Tour de Oblouk cycling tour also has a local history: it was first held in 1987 and was later moved to the first weekend in July. On one route, participants start in Nezdřev, ride through approximately ten villages and return to Nezdřev. Unlike the hiking route, which follows a sequence of named places, this tour is described as starting and ending in the village. Individual routes may vary. If you would like to include the tour in your travel plans, check whether and when it will take place and which route is planned.
