In Vendée, plains and bocage alternate with coastline, marshland, dunes and forests. This variety of landscapes also shapes the different ways to explore the region: cycling routes connect nature and culture, wetlands invite birdwatching, and waterways offer another perspective on the Marais Poitevin. Historic sites and vibrant regional traditions complete the picture.

Cycling routes between bocage and coast

The cycling routes vary in character. The Bocage-Coast circular routes combine nature and culture; their hilly and flatter sections suit different ages and ability levels. The Vendée coastal route runs mostly on purpose-built paths. Flat, protected sections are suitable for family outings.

La Vélidéale crosses Vendée for around 60 kilometres through the bocage. Along the way are viewpoints, the Sèvre Nantaise and historic mills. La Vélodyssée includes 200 kilometres of cycling paths along the coast in Vendée; more than 60 percent of the route runs on paths reserved for cyclists. The Marais Poitevin has almost 800 kilometres of circular cycling routes, with individual loops ranging from 4 to 38 kilometres. Route lengths and networks may change; check the latest route information before setting out.

Birdwatching and natural areas

The Cité des Oiseaux is a protected bird area covering 56 hectares. An observatory, a viewing point and walking paths make it possible to watch waterbirds and migrating songbirds. The Réserve des Huttes has a different focus: this 146-hectare biological reserve presents the preserved marshland environment of the 19th century.

Vendée’s Espaces Naturels Sensibles cover a total of 3,000 hectares acquired to protect biodiversity. They are open free of charge for walks. Please follow marked paths and local environmental guidance. The total area may change as further land is acquired or areas are reclassified.

Explore the Marais Poitevin by water and on foot

In the Marais Poitevin, nature-based activities include boat and canoe trips, cycling, walks and birdwatching. The Marais Poitevin has 320 kilometres of navigable, marked waterways suitable for boat trips; this figure may change. The history of water management can also be seen in its structures: ports, washhouses, wells, quays, footbridges, locks, pontoons and hydraulic installations are all part of the region’s heritage. They can be explored on foot, by bicycle, on horseback, by boat or by canoe.

The traditional batai is a local part of the marshes’ boatbuilding heritage and is considered a forerunner of the boats now used on the waterways of the Marais Poitevin. The Abbaye de Maillezais offers another perspective on history: this Benedictine fortress, with its thousand-year-old remains, lies in the heart of the Marais Poitevin.

History, shows and craftsmanship

The Historial de la Vendée presents 7,000 years of history through modern, engaging and scholarly museography. It features a children’s museum, exhibitions and activities throughout the year. The Château de Tiffauges hosts shows and activities. It is considered the largest medieval complex in the region; its collection of war machines is regarded as unique worldwide.

The Haras national de la Vendée explores the relationship between people and horses. Shows and educational workshops bring these themes to life, along with the work of the national stud farm. Together with the historic mills along La Vélidéale and the Abbaye de Maillezais, they offer different ways to discover history and regional culture without focusing on the same kind of visit.

Regional specialities

Vendée is known for mogette, préfou, trouspinette, tourtisseaux and gâche. Seafood specialities mentioned include sardines from Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, Vendée-Atlantique oysters, sole and shellfish. If you are looking for current producers or the availability of specific products, check this information separately.
