Pouzauges: Discover Lanes, Mills and the Lake
Accommodation in Pouzauges
Pouzauges offers a range of options for a stay: a maze of lanes, medieval heritage, trails with different themes and Lac de l’Espérance. If you’re looking for a hotel in Pouzauges, these features can help you plan your stay around your interests.
Lanes, fortress and murals
Fourteen lanes form a maze between Rue Catherine de Thouars, Avenue des Moulins and the château. At each entrance, a mosaic names the lane and explains the meaning of its name. A QR code is located right beside each mosaic. Scan it to hear a 20- to 30-second audio explanation about the name’s history and the choice of illustration. Each entrance thus offers a brief, distinct insight into the design and history behind the name.
Pouzauges Castle is a medieval fortress with a 355-metre-long curtain wall. The Church of Notre-Dame du Vieux Pouzauges offers a different historical perspective: its murals date from the 12th and 13th centuries, were rediscovered in 1948 and are arranged in three tiers. Their creation and rediscovery mark two distinct points in time. A seven-minute audio presentation is available for visitors; check in advance whether it is currently available.
Windmills and trails
The twin windmills of Terrier Marteau were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Bread, brioche, flour and drinks are sold at the site. The selection may vary by season, so if you’re visiting specifically for a particular product, it’s best to check its availability in advance.
Trail descriptions dated 2024 introduce routes with different highlights. Les Étangs connects Vieux Pouzauges with the Bois de la Cibretière and passes around ten ponds. The route also offers views of Pouzauges and the surrounding area. The Sentier Nature runs from Pouzauges Castle through the Bois de la Folie to the windmills of Terrier Marteau. Les Manoirs et Logis is a panoramic circular route in Pouzauges that passes two manor houses.
The routes have clearly distinguishable themes: Les Étangs focuses on ponds and views, while the Sentier Nature links the castle, woodland and windmills along its route. Les Manoirs et Logis offers a different focus, with its two manor houses. You can use these features to choose the landscapes and historical themes that interest you most.
At Lac de l’Espérance
Lac de l’Espérance is a five-hectare lake surrounded by trees, with a landscaped beach. It’s a good place for swimming, walking and relaxing. Swimming is unsupervised; conditions and facilities may vary by season. If you plan to swim, check the conditions before your visit. There are also children’s play equipment and shaded picnic tables on site. The lake offers several ways to enjoy a break outdoors, while the lanes, church and trails showcase other sides of Pouzauges.
