L'Orbrie: Hiking, Forest and Heritage
Accommodation in L'Orbrie
The Vendée, large forest areas and several mapped routes shape the landscape of L'Orbrie. The area is also home to a departmental park and historical and cultural features such as the wallpapers at La Pavée. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore explore different sides of the town.
Landscape and Parc de la Grotte
The Vendée borders around two thirds of the municipality. L'Orbrie covers 932 hectares, of which 505 hectares are forest and woodland. Most of these areas lie in the southern section of the Vouvant-Mervent state forest. The figures describe two different aspects of the landscape: the river’s share of the municipal area and the extent of its wooded areas.
The Parc de la Grotte is a five-hectare departmental park with shaded paths and a small artificial grotto. Ginkgo, magnolia, maritime pine, boxwood and yew grow in the park. The shaded picnic area has toilets and provides access to hiking trails. If you plan to use the facilities, check their current condition before your visit.
Hiking routes with different profiles
The Puy Chabot loop starts in L'Orbrie, is 8.2 kilometres long and is rated moderate. Near Sauvaget, it follows the Vendée, crosses a footbridge and passes via Puy Chabot and the Bois aux Fraises into the forest. Its route description thus combines a river, a bridge and a stretch through the forest.
The Sauvaget route is also rated moderate, but at seven kilometres it is shorter than Puy Chabot. It starts at the Salle polyvalente in L'Orbrie and follows the Vendée near Sauvaget. Yellow markings and the number 2 identify the route. If distance is your main consideration, the two moderate routes differ by 1.2 kilometres.
At 15 kilometres and rated difficult, Le Barrage is designated as a more challenging hike. The loop starts in L'Orbrie and follows the Vendée, passes through the forest and runs along the shores of Lac de Mervent. Along the way, the route reaches a viewpoint at the Mervent dam and passes the remarkable Chêne à l’Ermite tree.
The La Fontaine à l’Ermite hike goes through the Mervent-Vouvant forest, along the lake and the Vendée. There are steep sections beside the river, and a rocky stretch requires some short scrambling. In wet weather, the rocks can be very slippery. The route starts in L'Orbrie at the Fontaine à l’Ermite roundabout car park, via Allée de la Balingue. Before setting out on this section, take the weather and route conditions into account. Six circular trails also make it possible to explore the area around L'Orbrie both across the plains and through the forest.
Mountain biking and heritage
Routes for mountain biking are also mapped. Circular route No. 6 La Balingue starts at the Fontaine à l’Ermite roundabout in L'Orbrie and has 197 metres of elevation gain. The difficult mountain bike loop No. 13 Saint-Michel-le-Cloucq connects the Mervent forest massif with Fontenay-le-Comte and passes through L'Orbrie and Saint-Michel-le-Cloucq. The two descriptions offer different points of reference: No. 6 gives the elevation gain, while No. 13 gives the difficulty and route. Conditions can change; check them locally before your ride.
Among the historical and cultural highlights are the panoramic wallpapers “L’Eldorado” at Logis La Pavée. Created by Hehrmann and Zipélius in 1849, they consist of 24 panels, are considered a unique example in the Vendée and even in France, and are listed as an object under the protection of the Monuments historiques. Restored sections can be viewed at the Clod’Aria municipal library in L'Orbrie. Check current opening hours before visiting the library.
The church of Saint-Vincent houses a remarkable 19th-century wooden confessional, listed since 1990 in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments. Viticulture is also part of the town’s history: L'Orbrie historically developed into a wine-growing village and adopted Saint Vincent as its patron saint. This reflects the town’s historical identity, not a current wine offering.
